JOHN and PHOEBE were the parents of RICE MATHIS (OR MATTHIS) and ZACHEOUS (not sure of other descendants). (Mathis, Matthis, Mathews, and Matthews are all variations of the spelling of the family name.)
RICE Matthis of Thomas County, Georgia, married Levicy Albritton. Their children were: WILLIAM, Lumpkin, Milton, Daniel, John, James, Miles, Crawford, Mary and Jane. This family moved to Taylor County, Florida in the early 1800s. WILLIAM married Julia Driggers. Their children were: William Berry, JOSEPH JACKSON (DEAM), Elisha Smith, and Melissa. DEAM married Sally Copeland. Their children were: Rilla, twins Bessie and Belle, and Leo Leonard (LEE). LEE was my grandfather. His mother died when he was about two or three years old, and he lived around with relatives most of his growing up years in the area that was then Lafayette County, FL. It later was to become Dixie County, FL. He was a railroad section foreman in Old Town, and several other Florida towns. He was a Baptist minister, and was active in the North Florida area. Lee married Georgiann Melissa Osteen, daughter of Jake and Lizzie Osteen. Their children were Connie (d. at 3 mos.)(buried in Priscilla Baptist Church graveyard, Bell, FL); Florence, Sally(married Elvin Palmer, then Harold Lee, d. 1956, buried at Oxford, FL); Ruthamae (d. at 7 yrs.) and Leo Leonard, Jr.(Lee, Georgianne, Ruthamae, and Leo, Jr. are buried at Old McCrabb Cemetery, Old Town, FL.) Florence is my mother. Her first husband was A.P. Brownlee from Chiefland. Their children were Patsy and me, Betty. Then, Florence married Sam Lanier, and they had Leo Dasher (Buddy), Sammy James, Jr., Connie (Lee, Barlow), John Sidney, Judy (m. J. O. Langford), and William Ronald (m. Christa Eubanks). I have a lot of info on the other Matthises (sometimes spelled with one "t"). If anyone wants to know more, or to share something you know that I don't, please contact me. Would like to hear from you. I especially would like to hear anything you might know about Jake and Lizzie Stephens Osteen, my mother's maternal grandparents.
