My name is Gladys Padilla Zapata Rodriguez. I am the last of 14 children of Jose Monserrate Padilla Rodriguez and Justina Zapata Rodriguez de Padilla.I was born in 1947.
Mami was a great story teller. I loved hearing her stories of long,long ago. She remembered many details, names and events despite her age.
She was a small woman at 4'11" but truly a giant to be reckoned with especially after she migrated to Brooklyn NY in 1948. As a single mother she raised the last 7 of us with much sacrifice and hard work. I remember it well when she held 3 jobs in one day, babysitting, selling clothes door to door ( barely speaking English or being able to drag the heavy suitcase full of merchandise ) and then having to rush to work nights in a hospital.
Mami passed away 11 days into her 98th birthday, on Jan 31st,2005
We have much to appreciate. Thanks Mom for your love and your legacy.
