- Short list of Harold Paine & family descendents... (83 KB)
This is a summary of our descendents, beginning in Halifax County Virginia in 1758, when Charles Payne Sr. was born. Traceing the Payne/Paine name becomes very difficult, not only because of the numerous spellings, but also because of the recycling of given names over the years. "Charles" is used over and over again. During the late 1700's and early 1800's, there were at least five Charles Payne's living in the northeastern part of Georgia. So, short of locating wills, land sales, poll tax records, or a census, a lot of detective work has to be done in order to make a connection.
- History of the Payne/Paine Families since 1664 (21 KB)
This explains why the first Payne came to America from England. The sequence was put together by Bob Meadows (a Payne from his mother's side), who has more analytical skills than anyone I have ever known. How else could he sort out all of the Charles's and John's (and all of the other recycled first names) to make sense out of it all.
- Payne's in 1820 and 1830 census (2 KB)
The Charles Payne's listed are Charles Payne, Sr. and Charles Payne, Jr. Charles Sr. lived on the same acreage as Charles Sr. The land was owned by a John Payne who I believe was another son of Charles Sr. (unconfirmed).
- Source: 1780 Will in Pittsylvania Co. VA (13 KB)
This is a copy of the will of John Payne Sr. leaving the Payne homeplace in Pittsylvania County VA to Charles Payne Sr. In later years the will was challenged by other brothers. No record of resolution.
- Chas. & William Payne, brothers, Hawkins County VA (1 KB)
In 1785 (or therabouts), Charles & William Payne received land grants on the Holston River in Hawkins County TN. Charles lived there for 14 years before moving to Franklin County GA.
- Indian threats to early settlers in Hawkins Co. TN (1 KB)
Although Hawkins County (Carter's Valley) was relatively safe from the Cherokees (compared to their northern neighbors), there were incidents where families had to congregate in a fort for safety from attacks. It is amazing that these early settlers were willing to move to this frontier in order to obtain free land.
- Charles Payne Sr. Revolutionary War Service (5 KB)
Charles Payne Sr. was a member of the Virginia Militia, and, as was typical of militia service, reported for duty when he was called upon. This is a record of his testimony when he applied for a pension in Warren County TN. Can you imagine going to all that trouble for $23.00 a year?
