| I am researching my grandparents' families, the HAAPALA, ISOJÄRVI, LARSON (originally LASSILA) and PANNELL families. The HAAPALA (originally HAAPALAINEN) family, traced back to the 1700s, originates from Sotkamo in the Finnish Kainuu region. Other family branches of this family include Clemettinen, Heikkinen, Korhonen and Sirvio. The ISOJÄRVI family roots come from Kemijärvi and Salla in the Lapland region of Finland and from Kuusamo in the eastern Koillismaa region, also, known as the "Finnish Alps". Of the Lapland families, the Halonen family goes back into the early 1500s. Families traced to the 1600s include Karppa, Kuhmitsa, Luiro, Luusua, Oinas, Ollila, Pietilä, Räisänen, Salmijärvi and Tenno. Others traced into the 1700s include Imponen, Jaakkola, Jumisko, Kangas, Karvonen, Kelloniemi, Kononen, Kursu, Maajaakkola, Saija, Tarvas and Tervi. The Kuusamo families include Heiskanen, Kallunki, Karjalainen, Lamsa, Patosalmi, Pitka and Tiermas researched back to the 1700s with the Leinonen family into the 1600s. The John LARSON (nee Johan LASSILA) family came from Pello, Finland. In the United States they finally settled in Franklin, MN although they had previoused lived in Hurley, WI and Ellouez, MI. I have recently made contact with a cousin in Finland who has researched this family back into the 1500s in Pello, Kittilä, and Muonio, Finland -- I'm looking forward to adding his database to my research. The John PANNELL family is still a mystery... although the latest hints suggest both England and Scotland as the land of his heritage. |
