OBITUARY from Cumberland Advocate, Cumberland, WI; Sept. 8, 1910:
ABIJAH LUKE RIPLEY, a veteran of the Civil War, died at his home at Silver Lake, Friday, September 2, 1910, aged sixty-five years.
The deceased was born at Sun Prairie, Dane county, Wisconsin, July 10, 1845, and when but seventeen years of age enlisted in the 29th Wis. Inf. Vols. and served with that organization until the close of the war.
He was married July 29, 1880, to Eliza H. Davison, of Amboy, Minnesota, and came to Barron county and settled at Silver Lake in September, 1905.
The deceased was a large-hearted, generous, hard-working man, a good citizen and a true friend. He leaves a wife and four children: Frank Ripley of North Dakota, Mrs. Libring of Silver Lake, Mrs. Anna Allen of Winnebago, Minnesota, and Mrs. Louise Russ, of Truman, Minnesota, to mourn the loss of a kind and loving husband and father. Funeral services were held at the church at Silver Lake, Sunday afternoon, and interment was at Lakeside.
(Note: According to the Family Bible and also census returns, Luke Ripley was born July 10, 1850, so he was only sixty years old when he died. Also, according to the State Historical Society of Wisconsin, there is no record of his ever having served in the Civil War. He would have been only twelve years old. His three older half-brothers, Horace, Lewis and John did serve--Horace and Lewis in Wisconsin units and John in an Illinois unit. If Luke did, in fact, serve with the 29th Wisconsin Infantry, he was probably a runaway who joined them without benefit of enlistment.)
