She was living in Long Beach, Calif. in 1929 with her husband and ten year old son. She started dating other men and one day while her husband was away at work. One day when he came home from work, she told him that she was leaving with another man and she wanted him to give her his paycheck before she left. She also intended to leave their son with his father. An argument ensued and Vivian grabbed a knife. He tried to disarm her and, in the struggle, she was stabbed in the stomach. She died and he was tried for manslaughter. Her father, Reuben Ripley testified for his son-in-law, but he was found guilty of involuntary manslaughter and served about two years in jail.
