Updated April 12, 2002

About Our Family Research

This family is descended from Sgt. Edward Hinman and Hannah Stiles married in 1651 in newly founded Stratford, CT. She was the daughter of Francis Stiles & Sarah Clark married in England.
Francis Stiles & Sgt. Edward Hinman were co-founders in settling
Stratford, CT.
Edward & Hannah (Stiles) Hinman had eight children. This is well documented in archives and research by the Hinman Family Association. Their offspring: Sarah, Titus, Samuel, Benjamin, Hannah, Mary, Patience and Edward. Jr. Edward, Jr, our ancestor, married Hannah Burroughs, daughter of John Burroughs of Jamaica, Long Island. Son, Edward was only a boy when his father died in 1672. Edward jr. & Hannah married in 1698 or 1699. They had twelve children born in Stratford, CT. Older siblings moved elsewhere, mostly to Woodbury, CT.
Capt. Samuel Hinman, 4th son of Edward Jr. was born in Stratford in 1705, left Stratford to serve in the militia in the French & Indian war.He learned to survey with the British army and helped lay out the town of Goshen, CT.
He became one of its founders. He had twelve children by his two wives: Abigail and Mary. With Mary he had twins, both 26 July, 1736. The twin, Samuel Jr. married Asine Colt. Their son, Samuel & wife, Anna Colt, our anestors married in 1771.
Samuel III was born 22 June 1753 and married Anna Colt b. 17 Nov. 1749. Samuel moved to New York state, abt 1789 living in Tioga County which later Broome County. He served in the Revolutionary War but his grave has not yet been located.
Several sons left Connecticut and moved to Broome County. We have names of the children born to Samuel III and Anna Colt. Some disagree as it brings their research into question. Oldest is Samuel IV b. 4 May 1775; Miles b. 25 Oct 1776; Lewis b. 13 March 1780; Roswell b. 1782; John n.d. & Moses b. 28 Sept 1790. Two daughters were born also: Anna, 1778 & Esther b. 16 Feb 17, 1784. Our ancestor is Miles Hinman who married Lorra Kirby on Sept. 29, 1802 , a few months after the Baptist Church in Upper Lisle was founded. Her father, Reuben Kirby and mother, Anna Guthrie from Woodbury, CT. had come to the Susquahenna Valley in New York state to settle near Afton. Miles & Lorra Hinman had seven children of whom five died of consumption and are buried in the graveyard of the Baptist Church in Upper Lisle, N.Y. Only the eldest, Kirby Hinman and our ancestor, Ira Perry Hinman survived to have children.
Ira Perry Hinman was born in Upper Lisle, Broome County, NY on 23 August 1819. He married Lydia B. Wheeler born May 4, 1819.
Her father, George Washington Wheeler was a judge and served as
Guardian for young Ira Perry after his parents died: Miles in 1829 and Lorra in 1836. This is authenticated on grave stones and in family bible. Ira Perry & Lydia Wheeler, who were childhood playmates living across the road from each other were married on the 19th of February, 1840.
George W. Wheeler, known to family as General Wheeler was excommunicated from the Baptist church in Upper Lisle and moved out of town in disgrace. He had gotten much power and became very wealthy, living in a mansion in Triangle, overlooking the river. Between 1838 and 1842, both Kirby & brother, Ira Perry Himan re-located to north Western New York, as Judge Gearge Wheeler had moved to Carlisle, New York. Ira Perry owned a farm in Wyoming County. The couple had two sons & three daughters:
George W., the eldest and Charles Eugene Hinman, their youngest
son & child. Eliza Wheeler, daughter #1, Helen Francis #2.
After the Civil War, several Hinman & Wheeler families headed
west and settled in Bellevue & Maquokieta, Iowa.
