Born Jan. 2, 1920, in Nelson, Nebraska, he was raised as a farmer.
LaVerne, as he was known to family was the second of five children of Reece Carl and Goldie Peery.
He was raised in Nebraska and Missouri and by 1941 was in Washington, D.C. working for a construction company.
He later joined the U.S. Army Air Corp. and served his country in that branch of the armed services during World War II.
Later he returned to Kansas City, Missouri and went to work for the Santa Fe railroad, from which he eventually retired.
He and wife Laura Birt never had any children but Laura had one child from a previous marriage and LaVerne raised her as his own.
In 1980 he moved to Marionville, Missouri, and bought his parents home from his mother, Goldie,( his father Carl died in 1965), who moved to a retirement home in Aurora, Missouri.
He was active in local politics, and loved horses, and family.
LaVerne died Dec. 22, 2001, at his home in Marionville, Mo.
