This family history builds onto work previously done & printed by Margaret Baker of Sydney who is the wife of John & Violets grandson Ross Baker; & also by Louise Stanton of Dorrigo. My interest initially stemmed from curiosity about my Grandmother's early life in Tilba Tilba & from stories of Grandfathers exit from Denmark as a stowaway at age 11 & other travells. Knowing there was more & my lust for travel propelled me to search the Danish connection for myself. A 50 year old envelope found by chance in a book by my brother Ken Peterson provided a Danish name & address. Then a chance meeting with a friend not seen for 40 years whose daughter was marrying a Dane led to my recieving an email from a Birthe Steen Jensen in Copenharvn. On seeing the name 'Steen' I knew that I had ended a 3 year long search for our Danish family. So it was that in September 2002, Margaret, my wife & I met with Birthe Steen Jensen & Ane Lisa Steen Jakobsen & thier beautiful families. Some further trips to Milton & Tilba shed more light on Violet Bate's family. In addition, researching many old photoes that had ben held by Jill Sams [nee Baker] & Ruth Gardiner [Nee Peterson], led to the Australian National Library's web site & their 'Corkhill Collection' of hundreds of old photoes of Tilba, including our Bate family. The Bate family is well documented, except in our case, for Osmonde & Mildred married to a Patrick Royan. The trail seemed cold until the Sydney phone directory led to a Royan in possession of the 'Royan', Family history. Some of the Royans had moved to Malanda in Queensland & it was there that I found Mildred & her brother Osmonde & their families & descendants. The next part of our history that I wish to build on is that of my Mothers parents Edward Smith & Catherine Tansey.
