He was said to have carried all his belongings onhis back. We know nothing of his activities or work until he purchasedland of the Robert Richey 'Rural Grove' tract in the Smithfield area in1818, but it is likely that he farmed like everyone else. Thomasacquired several parcels of land thereafter to a total value of at least$6000 when he sold out in 1842. (He and his family migrated to Wisconsinin 1836.) A modest fortune in those days. At some time in the 1818-1836 period, Thomas bought and was proprietor ofthe White Horse Tavern, located on what is now U.S. 119 just north ofSmithfield and across from the Wilson service station. The White HorseTavern was a two-Story log building with 3 rooms up and 3 rooms down. Alog shed on the rear served as a kitchen. It is know to have existedbetween 1794 and 1888, and its life probably spilled over a little oneach side to span a hundred years. The tavern was obviously a social center and is remembered largely forthe violence that occurred around it. Tippling, perhaps two murders andone death from a man being thrown from a horse are all recalled.'[FINAL COMBINED.GED]
