From the History of Fillmore Co.., MN, published 1912, page 669 'Leonidas
Woodle, a retired farmer and veteran of the Civil War, nowliving in the
Village of Canton, has for many years been an active factorin the
progress and development of the county. He was born in Green Co.,WI,
July 4, 1840, son of Thomas and Rachael (Palmer) Woodle, theWisconsin
pioneers. Leonidas was 14 years of age when his father diedand he was
then thrown on his own resources. In 1864 he came to Cantonand located
on section eight, where he purchased 200 acres of land whichhad been
entered in 1856. On this tract he carried on general farmingand dealt
extensively in stock until the year 1904, when he moved toCanton village,
where he now lives. He enlisted in the First MinnesotaBattery,
Independent Light Artillery, in 1861, and re enlisted in March,1864,
being honorably discharged July 1, 1865. He displayed his courageand
valor at the Battle of Pittsburgh Landing, the siege of Corinth,
thesecond battle of Corinth, the siege of Vicksburg, the siege of
Atlanta,on the march with Sherman to the sea, and around Richmond. He
alsoparticipated in numerous battles and skirmishes of minor importance,
andwas present at the Grand Review in Washington, the scenes of which
hewill never forgot. Mr. Woodle has been an active, go-ahead man all
hislife. He is a Republican in politics, and of a progressive
temperament,having been instrumental in the organization of the Harmony
Creamery, inwhich he served on the board of directors for a number of
years. Hesecured the money to build the Farmers' Elevator in Canton in
1894, andwas president of the company for two years. Up to the time of
hisretirement in 1904 he was one of the most active workers in the
county.The subject of this sketch married Nancy J., the daughter of
JonathanFranklin, and they are the parents of six children: Charles F.,
ofAustin; Allen A., of Castor, Canada; Ernest F., of Canton Twp;
Etta;Leonidas; and Frances (deceased). Charles F. married Luella Hervey,
andthey have two children, Loren and Dorothy. Allen A. married
NoraVandewalker, and they have one daughter, Trella Ione. Ernest F.
marriedEdith Harsh, and they have four children; Helen, Carroll, Florence
andCarmen. Etta is the wife of Roy Norton, and they are the happy
parentsof twins, Frances and Alton. Mr. and Mrs. Roy Norton live on the
oldhomestead. Mrs. Leonidas Woodle, who was Nancy J. Franklin, was born
inOswego Co., NY, March 7, 1844, daughter of Jonathan and Polly
(Near)Franklin, native of New York state......'
