HEMORRHAGE OF BRAIN FATAL TO LOCAL RANCHER
Samuel M. Phillips, Lincoln Park rancher, late Friday afternoon lay down on the bed beside his wife, who has been ill with pneumonia the past 10 days, and a few minutes later was dead.
His death was due to cerebral hemorrhage.
Since Friday morning Mr. Phillips, former Cripple Creek mine operator, had complained of a splitting headache. Friday afternoon he collapsed in the kitchen of his home, 320 Sherman avenue.
He was helped into his wife's bedroom. For a time he lay on the floor and then hr got onto the bed. As his wife rubbed his head to relieve the pain, he died. The brain hemorrhage may have resulted from a blood clot which traveled upward from his foot, which was bruised a few days ago. He had complained of throbbing and pain in his foot earlier Friday.
Mr. Phillips, who would have been 76 years of age on December 31, had resided on Lincoln Park for the past 20 years. Prior to that he had operated a number of leased mining claims in the Cripple Creek district and from money he accumulated there he purchased the ranch on which to spend his declining years.
For a time, Mr. Phillips had also mined in the San Juan country and was well known by mining men thru-out this section.
He was a member of the First Methodist church and the Odd Fellows lodge.
His wife, Mrs. Carrie Phillips, Saturday suffered a reaction from the shock of her husband's death and her condition, aggravated by the congested lungs , was described as quite serious. The couple have no children.
Funeral arrangements for Mr. Phillips will be announced later by the Wilson mortuary.
