James (Peter) Martin (son of Edward Martin and Elizabeth Fitzpatrick) was born 1 July 1884 in Wonna South Australia, and died 9 May 1975 in Adelaide South Australia. He married Vera Cecily Jenkins on 21 September 1921 in Broken Hill New South Wales, daughter of Albert Edward Jenkins and Louisa Miller.

Includes NotesNotes for James (Peter) Martin:
Eldest son of eleven children. Had to leave school at the age of thirteen and go to work to help support the family after the death of his mother Elizabeth in 1897.
The family moved to Port Pirie in South Australia in 1898 when the BHP Smelters were relocated there.
Stayed in Port Pirie until 1903 then returned to Broken Hill where he remained until 1915. During this time, most of his siblings also returned to Broken Hill and were cared for by Jim who took over the role as head of the family.

After a stint at John Martins store in Adelaide, he returned to Broken Hill and worked at Goodhearts Drapery where he met his future wife, Vera Jenkins. After their wedding in 1921, the pair opened up there own store, J.P.Martins The Block Corner on the corner of Argent and Oxide streets. The shop did very well and had its 50th anniversary in 1971. It no longer exists (2000)

Jim and Vera and family retired to Adelaide in 1948.

After very humble beginnings, both Jim and Vera had very successful lives and are to be admired for their courage and fortitude.
The pity of it is: none of their children knew of the struggles and hardships their parents had undergone.
