My maiden surname is McDOWALL and I have been researching my family history for some time now. I would like to hear from anyone who is also researching the same family lines and can be contacted on c.pienaar@btopenworld.com - I would particularly like to move further back in the family and find John and Jean's parents as well!
John McDOWALL was born about 1763 - he married Jean or Jane McHAFFIE in Kirkcolm, Wigtownshire in 1788. Their children were John, Elizabeth, William, Alexander and James(1) from whom I am descended.
James(1) born abt 1804 married Margaret KERR (b abt 1804) in Kirkcolm in 1829 and they had 5 children - Jean, John, James(2), William & Margaret.
James(2) was born in 1835, married Anna Cunningham CRAIG and later Sarah Eleanor ARMOUR. His children by Anna were James(3), Robert Craig, David, John, Anna Muir, Margaret Kerr and Jeanie and by Sarah he had Colin, Joseph, Mary & Sarah.
James(3) was born in 1857 and married Flora BELL - their children were James, Mary, Andrew, Annie, Robert Craig, Flora Livingston Bell, and Colin William Armour.
Robert Craig McDOWALL (b 1898) married Catherine Stalker MACREADIE in 1816 and of their 4 children only James(4) b 1916 survived infancy. The other three were Robert Macreadie, William Bell and Flora.
