Notes for Mathew Allen: Mt. Zion Baptist Church of Alexandria, Alabama (submitted by: Suzanne Chiquette)
Mt. Zion is one of the most historic churches in northeast Alabama. It stands about one mile west of Alexandria, in the gap of a ridge dividing the waters of Cane and Tallassahatchee Creeks. Some of the charter members were James Crook, Dr. and his wife Amelia, Joseph Lloyd, John Sheppard and John Hubbard. the early families who were members of the church were the Weavers, Densons, Woodruffs, Greens, McCellans, Whatleys, McAuleys, Hamptons, Gladdens, parks, Glovers, Wares, Bushes, Allens, Paces, Montgomerys, Weatherlys, Ezelles, and Lloyd In 1834, Mr. Crook and Mr. Lloyd emigrated from Spartanburg District, SC, to settle in Alexandria Valley. With their neighbors erected a log school house of the crudest nature on site of Tallassahatchee Battlefield that took place in 1813. It was built without a nail in the whole structure, from the Ground sills to the eight poles that held the boards in place in the roof. this was both a schoolhouse and a meetinghouse. For worshipping purposes it was held in common with Baptist, methodist, and Presbyterians, but it was the birthplace of what was soon to become one of the most popular churches in Middle Alabama and appropriately named Mt. Zion. In 1860, a fine church was built. It still stands today behind the new sanctuary that was erected in 1966. the new site was given by Dr. Atkinson Pelham. He took $1.00 in payment to make it legal. One of the oldest graves is that of Mrs. Charles Wesson (12/8/1838), daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Samuel Boyd. The cemetery is also resting place of veterans of the Confederacy and soldiers of more recent wars. ___________________________________________________________________________________ 1850 Census Benton County, Alabama- Jackson District, Family No. 316 Allen, Matthew 57 SC Planter-$4,000.00 Allen, Rebecca 50 SC Allen, John S. 19 SC Farmer Allen, F.M. 17 SC Farming Allen, O.P. 15 SC Farming Allen, Elizabeth 13 SC Allen, Mary 13 SC Allen, Martha 9 AL ____________________________________________________________________________________ WAR OF 1812 ALLEN, Matthew, Calhoun County, AL.
