THE JOSEPH C. PIERCE FAMILY IS A DECENDANT OF GEORGE PIERCE, WHO
CAME TO THE UNITED STATES IN THE 1800's FROM ENGLAND. HE IS THE GREAT, GREAT GRAND DADDY OF JOSEPH C. PIERCE. GEORGE PIERCE, TO
THE BEST OF INFORMATION FOUND, WAS A VERY YOUNG MAN WHE HE CAME
TO THE UNITED STATES. HE TRAVELED FROM VIRGINIA TO SOUTH CAROLINA

COUNTY, SC SUPERIOR COURT, ON OCT. 4, 1823, STATE HE WAS THEN 26
YEARS OLD AND WAS BORN IN LINCOLN COUNTY, ENGLAND, AND HAD MIGRA-
TED TO THIS COUNTRY SEVEN YEARS PREVIOUSLY. THIS MADE HIM ABOUT
NINETEEN YEARS OF AGE WHEN HE ARRIVED IN AMERICA. THERE IS SOME INDICATION THAT HE WAS IN BUSINESS WITH A BROTHER IN VIRGINIA.
ACTUAL PROOF HAS NOT BEEN FOUND, BUT THERE IS REASON TO BELIEVE
THAT THEY SPLIT UP AND GRORGE PIERCE MOVED TO THE BARNWELL DIST-
RICT IN SOUTH CAROLINA. IN SOUTH CAROLINA HE MET THE JOHN CORBITT
FAMILY AND THEIR DAUFGTER AMELIA. RECORDS INDICATE THAT THE CORBITT FAMILY LEFT S.C. AND CAME TO THE MILLWOOD DISTRICT OF WARE COUNTY GEORGIA. THIS AREA IS NOW PART OF ATKINSON COUNTY.
CENSUS RECORDS INDICATE THAT THIS WAS ABOUT THE YEAR 1825.
EVIDENTLY GEORGE PIERCE LEFT SOUTH CAROLINA A FEW YEARS LATER AND
CAME TO THE MILLWOOD DISTRICT OF WARW COUNTY, WHERE HE AND AMELIA
CORBITT WERE MARRIED ABOUT 1830.
WARE COUNTY DEED RECORDS SHOW THAT HE PURCHASED A LOT OF LAND,
#189, DEED BOOK #QQ", PAGE 416, DATED FEB. 1, 1838 FROM JAMES
FULLWOOD. THIS WAS THE PIERCE HOME PLACE UNTIL HE MOVED TO CLINCH
COUNTY. A FULL LIST OF THE CHILDREN BORN TO GEORGE AND AMELIA PIERCE, CANNOT BE GIVEN WITH ANY CERTAINTY, BUT THE FOLLOWING ARE
IDENTIFIED AND VOUCHED FOR BY DESCENDANTS.

GEORGE HARGE.

GEORGE PIERCE SERVED IN THE INDIAN WAR WITH CAPT. DAVID MILLER'S
COMPANY OF THE WARE COUNTY MILITIA IN 1838. HE IS SAID TO HAVE
HELPED DRIVE THE LAST REMAINING INDIANS OUT OF THE OKEFENOKEE
SWAMP. RECORDS ALSO INDICATE THAT HE AND HIS WIFE RAN A BOARDING
HOUSE IN THE MILLWOOD DISTRICT OF WARE COUNTY, NOW ATKINSON CO.
AND ALSO LIVE ON A FARM IN THIS AREA.
SHORTLY AFTER THE CIVIL WAR, GEORGE AND AMELIA PIERCE MOVE TO THE
566TH DISTRICT OF CLINCH COUNTY NEAR WHERE SOME OF HIS CHILDREN
HAD ALREADY MOVED. (THIS AREA IS NOW LANIER COUNTY). THEY SPENT
THEIR LAST YEARS IN ECHOLS COUNTY WITH THEIR SON THOMAS, AND DIED
AT HIS HOME ABOUT 1875.
WILLIAM C. PIERCE, THE OLDEST SON OF GEORGE AND AMELIA PIERCE,
