In my approximately 20 years of family history research I have gone back in my surname line to my gr-gr grandparents Stephen W. and Delitha Pope. Apparently Stephen and Delitha were cousins since they were both Popes. I have found that Delitha was a daughter of Wesley Pope and Jane Jackson of Black River Township, Cumberland Co., N.C. I have been unable to connect Stephen with his parents. A writing by one of this couple's grand-daughters says that Stephen was a drifter who came to town and worked for Delitha's brother. Whether true or not his lineage remains a mystery.
Stephen and Delitha's second child, William Poole Pope was my direct ancestor. Stephen, his oldest son James and William P. all served in the Confederacy. James died of an illness in a hospital near Portsmouth, Va. Stephen caught tuberculosis, returned home and subsequently died of that disease. William returned home after the surrender and his release from the Union prison camp, Point Lookout, south of Washington, where he was held for over one year. He married Barbara Jane Strickland, who's parentage is also not known, and sometime, around 1885 moved through south Georgia, north Florida and by the 1900 census had settled in Coffee Co., Ala. William died there in 1930 and according to family members, Barbara Jane died a couple of years later. Stephen's parentage and Barbara Jane's parentage are my current obstacles. I have much info on Stephen and William P's descendants which continues. I still hope to make contact with descendents of James Alexander, of Sopchoppy, Fla and William Wesley of Opp, Ala. both siblings of my grandfather Willis Francis.
On June 3,2005 my wife and I made a trip to the Ala. State archives in Montgomery where we reviewed the quarterly civil war vets widows pension payments. After looking for over 10 years we found noted on the Jan 1932 list of warrants that Barbara Jane had died on Nov 10,1931. What a find!!!
In Oct 2005 we traveled to Cumberland-Sampson Cos spent several days in the Falcon, Dunn, Mingo area then followed Wm Poole's route thru Waycross-Thomasville, north Fla to Coffee Co, Ala. We secured copies of several property transfers, etc. These records tie Delitha's parentage introducing me to an old Rev War ancester Poole Hall Pope born in 1752 in old Dobbs Co.
Again in the fall of 2006 we visited the NC archives and Cumberland Co. but found nothing new.Stephen W. born about 1823 and Barbara Jane Strickland born Jul 1,1846 are still mysteries. Can you help???
