Our grandparents' families were:-
(a) Kleinberg : Kahan (from Russia)
(b) Tandowsky : Apfelbaum (from Poland/Prussia)
(c) Massa : Cardone (from Posillipo, Naples, Italy)
(d) Salemme : Porreca (from Posillipo, Naples,Italy).
I am trying to trace our family as far back as possible in all directions.
On my side of the family I only know most of the names, but almost none of the dates, as far back as all 4 Grandparents - and one Great-Grandfather. They all moved to London, England from Eastern Europe around 1900-6.
There was (a) Helena Kleinberg from Vilna (b.?, d.1955), married James Kahan from somewhere in Russia (born? Died c.1948) = my mother Gertrude Kahan's parents; (b) Miriam Tandowsky from Poland (born? died c.1941) married Samuel Apfelbaum (or Appelbaum) from Lodz (born c. 1886, died c. 1980) = my father Martin Apley's parents. My father's family changed their surname to Apley about 1920.
I know that Miriam's brother married Samuel's sister and they, together with several other Tandowsky brothers and sisters, led by their father "the patriarch, Eliohu Tandowsky", went to live in the USA - though I believe one went to France and one to Israel, too.
I do know of the names and addresses of some present day Tandowskys and Tandys in the USA but am keen to retrace as many of the others as possible. I did also meet two Kleinberg cousins of my mother in the USA many years ago (in 1964) but I think they both died several years ago and I do not know if they had any children.
On my husband, Franco's side I have the names of his 4 grandparents, who all came from Posillipo, Naples, Italy, I believe, and one great-grandfather who is said to have come from the Abruzzi region, - with talk of much earlier generations having come to Italy from Spain, but absolutely no details about that. I do not have dates for any of his grandparents.
There was (c) Louisa Massa who married Francesco Cardone = Franco's mother's parents; and (d) Teresa Salemme who married Vitale Porreca = Franco's father's parents. Vitale's father is the one who was said to have come from the Abruzzi.
Franco and I have three children:-
James (29), Julian (23) and Joanna (19)
who are all keen to learn about their ancestors, which is why I have commenced this search.
