Michael and brother John were playing by the railroad tracks at their Middletown, PA home. Michael crossed the railroad tracks after one train passed heading towards Pittsburgh. But Michael did not hear or see the Harrisburg-bound train coming down the tracks from the other direction. He was killed by the Harrisburg-bound train.
