I have been researching my family name and so far have discovered that my Prowse name originally came from the Devon area. In the 1700's they lived in the village of Kingston,Devon and in the 1800's lived in the village of Ringmore the next village. In 1748 a son Richard was born to Richard & Elizabeth Prowse. Richard(1748) became a Thatcher and married Susanna Randle July 1774 at Kingston and had the following children. Ollive 1775/ Richard 1777/ Susanna 1779/ Elizabeth 1782/ Thomas 1784/ Mary 1788 and Christian 1793. Both Thomas and Mary were baptized early as it was felt that they would not survive. However Thomas did survive and can be found on the 1851 census as an Invalid Teacher living in Plymouth. Christian married twice the first being to William Lane in 1815. They had a son John born February 1816. Christian re-married in 1825 to Robert Perriton at South Huish,Devon. They too were found living in Plymouth on the 1851 census with their children Robert 12yrs/James10yrs & George 7yrs. Also living at that address was Mary born 1779 & James born 1815. Richard born 1777 also became a Thatcher and married Mary Farley in February 1801 at Ringmore. They had the following children William August1801/Richard bapt March 1807/Peter bapt Dec1811/Mary bapt May 1814/James bapt December 1815/ Robert Bapt Nov 1818 and John bapt Nov 1822 three brothers Thomas Lavers Prowse, Peter Lavers Prowse and George Lavers Prowse all believed to be fishermen & were probably following the mackerel shoals around the coast. They eventually arrived in South Shields, Co Durham (Tyne & Wear). sometime during the mid 1800's. and they remained in South Shields as the industrial revolution was at its height and therefore more money could be earned Two of the brothers Thomas L (my G/grandfather) and George L married two Harkus sisters. My Grandfather George was killed on the first day of the Battle of the Somme (1 July 1916) His body has never been recovered but his name is on the Theipvil memorial in France. My father William and with two brothers Thomas and Stanley took part in the Jarrow Crusade March in 1936. Thomas left the march at Leicester and William & Stanley continued to London where my father and brother found work in Letchworth,Herts My Mother Roberta Carlton also born in South Shields came south and they were married 1937 at the Registry Office, Hitchin, Herts I was born at the Royal Free Hospital ,St Pancras, London on the 17th January 1939 The Carlton family I have only researched back to 1832 where a Robert Carlton Married Ann Frost at the parish Church Rougham Norfolk and then came from Great Massingham, Norfolk. Sometime circa 1850's they moved to South Shields. I joined the Royal Navy in 1954 and eventually ended up in submarines and when the submarine joined the 2nd Submarine Flotilla here in Plymouth I met my wife Susan Diane Blackney on St Valentines Day 1963 and we were married married July 1965 at St Boniface Church, St. Budeaux, Plymouth
