The PUKY Family

Updated June 28, 2008

About Our Family Research

INTRODUCTION:
According to the official documents, the history of the Hungarian noble families begins in middle of the XVI century. The precedent history is only known partially. The Bizáki branch of the PUKY family appears in 1590. The donation of Armálisa is not documented, but Borsod, Abauj, Heves and Pest were considered of noble origin, since its members were selected to positions as Judges, Superior Judges and members of the Supreme Court. In general, the whole country recognized the Bizáki Puky of nobility status.

The PUKY family therefore doesn't originate in the second half of the XVI century, but rather its origin dates from previous peridos as a branch of a much bigger "tribe". From the point of view of genealogical study it makes it even more interesting. This fact has motivated the present study of investigation of the past and the origins of this family. Today this is interesting because the millennial past of this family, offers an example of as the Hungarian purity of families they completed its history of the country. I have used all the data available in the genealogical studies of the Dr. Zoltán Vargha, Dr. Miklós Endes, the Handbook of Hungarian noble families and family data of the PUKYs.

THE ORIGINS:
The origin of the family's last name dates from the town Pók (Spider), in the vicinity of today's city of Györ, to the west of Budapest, where the first members of the family were known. In the Hungarian language, the addition of a "i" or a "y" at the end of a word means that it belongs to or is related with. Initially last names didn't exist, each person had only a simple name, but as the populations grew, It was necessary to qualify the name with an additional distinguishing characteristic. Frequently that qualifier referred to its occupation like for example Lakatos (Locksmith), Puskás (Fusilier), Huszár (Warrior on Horseback), Hajós (Boatman); in other cases the qualifier was a location or place of origin with which he/she was referred to like for example Fejérvary (of the white castle), Irsay (of the population of Irsa), Györy (of the town of Györ), Egerváry (of the castle of Eger). This is the case of the PUKY family that originated from the town of Pók, they began to call them Póky that was later deformed from Póky to Puky.

Initially, in Hungary, a last name was enough to identify the person, however when the families grew and migrated to another place, it became necessary to add a second epithet to the last name, therefore a new qualifier was added in front of the family name to distinguish the brancg of the family. In the case of the PUKY family, there were two branches known from the XIv century: Mérgesi and Bizáki PUKYs.

THE PÓK FAMILIES:
According to Mór Wertnek (in the document The Hungarian Nationality around the middle of the XIV century, pages 270 at 282, published in Temesvár, in 1892), in Pók the following "tribes" existed: Aba-i, Megyes-i, Mórichida-i, Gyarmat-i, PÓK-i and Mérges-i; of which originated the families: Abafalvi, Felsölehotai, Abafi, Gyarmaty, Megyesalji, Mórichidai, Mórócs, PÓKI and Mérgesi-PÓKI.

THE PÓKY:
According to documents of the PUKY family, the oldest representative in the family is Márton PUKY, who in 1220 acted as Judge during th reign of King András II. The son of Márton: Farkas PUKY, received a land donation from the king András II, in 1234. The son of Farkas was Tamás PUKY.

The first Hungarian documents that mention the PUKY family dates in the XIII century and they mention Tamás PUKY, who acted as Master of Ceremonies at the main door of the rooyal palace between the years of 1261 to 1295, receiving from the King Béla IV several land donations, in the vicinity of Béz and the castle of Mosony. In the year 1269 the donation of the Iszkáz in the vecinity of Veszprém, and Garasd in the county of Zala, and others.
