The Punte & Sloan Families

Updated February 5, 2003

About Our Family Research

This site contains two family trees. One tree contains my family tree and the family tree of my wife, Sharon Sloan. The other tree has information on Puntes. Many of the Puntes have roots in Baltimore, Maryland. Many with the surname Punte trace their roots to the old Duchy of Oldenburg. Many of the Puntes come from an area around a town known as Calveslage. The area is about 60 miles southwest of Bremmen. The spelling of the name varies over time with Punte as the latest spelling. Earlier spellings are Pund, Pundt and Pundte.

The families of Bernard Punte (given name was John Bernard Punte), a German immigrant and his wife Mary Elizabeth Krogmann are in the first family tree. Bernard Punte's arrival in Baltimore is believed to be 1892. In 1895 he married Mary Elizabeth Krogmann, fathered 7 children and drowned in 1908.

Mary Elizabeth Krogmann Punte was born in Baltimore the year after her parents arrived in the port of Baltimore. Her mother and father (Mary Anna Lange and Henry William Krogmann) emigrated from the port of Bremen in July 1868, they were from the Oldenberg area of what is modern day Germany. They traveled on the Bark Erna (sailing ship) in two groups. One group contained William's father, two brothers and sister and future wife. They married three weeks after their arrival in Baltimore. The second group consisted of another brother, his wife, infant son and father-in-law.

Bernard Punte was my grandfather, after whom I am named. My father, Carl A. Punte, had no knowledge of any relatives of his father. My research indicates that he may have had relatives in Baltimore. I have collected information on the various Puntes from Baltimore and Germany in hopes that some of them may be related. As of November 2002 I have made one connection between my family and another Punte family with roots in Baltimore. Most all of the present day Puntes in the US have their roots in Baltimore.

I am still putting the pieces together. If you have information on Puntes with roots in Baltimore please contact me. I will be happy to share my information with you

Family Photos
  • Krogmann Family - about 1890 (37 KB)
The exact date of this photo is unknown, but is believed to be about 1890. This analysis is based on known birth dates of the surviving children and as how they appeared in the photo. From left to right is son, Henry William, father Henry William, daughter Mary Elizabeth, mother Mary Anna and daughter Rose. Missing from the photo is daughter Maria Anna. She is thought to be alive at the time of this photo.
  • Mary Elizabeth Krogmann Punte (15 KB)
This photo is believed to be taken sometime after 1895, the marriage date of Bernard and Mary Punte. There is a corresponding picture of Bernard. These pictures were originally in oval frames. The whereabouts of the originals is unknown.
  • John Bernard Punte (32 KB)
This photo is believed to be taken sometime after 1895, the marriage date of Bernard and Mary Punte. There is a corresponding picture of Mary. These pictures were originally in oval frames. The whereabouts of the originals is unknown. This is the only known picture of Bernard. This same photo appears on his tombstone. Bernard’s legal name was John Bernard Punte. All references, except legal documents, list him as Bernard Punte. My father referred to him as Bernard and I was named after him, except my name is Bernard John Punte. It was very common for people from Europe to go by their middle name. Often this was done to distinguish them from their father, grandfather or uncles whom they were named after.
  • Carl and Hazel Punte's Wedding Picture (51 KB)
This photo was taken on September 14, 1941. Carl and Hazel were married in the chapel of Sacred Heart of Jesus Catholic Church in the Highlandtown section of Baltimore City Maryland. Standing to the left is Best Man Charles Bernard (Butz) Funk, nephew of Carl. Seated on the left is Maid of Honor Leana Whitmore. She was a friend of Hazel, and the daughter from the first marriage of Mildred Punte, Carl’s sister-in-law.
  • William, Antonette and Carl Punte (39 KB)
This date of this picture is believed to be around 1916. This would be near the time of Antonette's First Communion, and seems to match the ages of the children. The white dress also suggests this. From Left to right are William Henry, Antonette Julia and Carl Anthony Punte. William was the oldest born on December 12, 1904. Carl was born on August 15, 1906. Antonette is the youngest born on March 6, 1909. Notice the height and ages of the children, with Carl being noticeably shorter than his younger sister.
