The George Augustus Upshaw Family Updated December 29, 2002
About Our Family Research
George Augustus Upshaw was a great-grandson of Capt. William Upshaw, considered by Upshaw researchers to be THE patriarch of most Upshaws in America today. Briefly, G.A. Upshaw's line of descent is: Capt. William Upshaw (c.1666-c.1720) >> John Upshaw (1715-1801)>> Edwin Upshaw (1777-1849) >> George Augustus Upshaw (1802-1879).
G.A. Upshaw left his family's Virginia plantation around 1820 and headed west. He settled for a time in Missouri and also fought in the Mexican War in 1848. After the war, he moved his family to Texas where they braved numerous Indian attacks. Incredibly, he also served in the Civil War... at the age of 60! His life, and that of his family, is interesting, I think, and is a true reflection of the story of America.
