I have been researcing the Red Wings of Choteau Creek, Rouse Township, Charles Mix County,South Dakota for 15 months.
When I started my search I knew the names of Floyd's father, mother, brother, sisters, and his mother & fathers parents. He remembered that his Grandma Ellen lived with them at Choteau Creek when he was small. He remembered little else, and said that his family didn't talk much of the older generations.
I began searching census' , surfing the net for information,
and asked alot of questions about the Red Wings. My first good clue came from the Latter Day Saints Family Search Online....
it gave me the names of some of the red wings, and where they came from.....I also searched out some of the names listed on the census of Mdewakantons from Minnesota .
The best help I have received in my search of Native American ancestry has been from the Oyate Exchange, which has been designed for the research of the Mdewakanton Sioux.
I have gone back five generations on both sides, and now there are several family members interested in searching out their ancestry.
We are planning to go to the Camp McClellan Memorial in Davenport, Iowa this May, where we hope to join a lot of other Red Wings, and then also go to the RedWing family reunion at Fort Robinson this July.
