87I have been researching the Welu family for a couple of years and in 2004 attended a Welu family reunion in Dubuque Iowa where most of them originated and many still live in the area. My personal branch, John B.'s family, stepped to Minnesota and another branch, Dominic's went to North Dakota. I have been in contact with many of the branches but there are still a few that I have not yet contacted to gather their particular branch history. A cousin from Dubuque is helping and we received a lot of help from some of the family who did prior research and we just expanded it and in some cases just had to fine tune it. It is a wonderful feeling to discover something new about your ancestors.
We discovered that Nickolas arrived in the United States March 28, 1887 in New York. He traveled on the Waesland. A younger brother, John B Welu arrived in New York on March 12, 1890 on the Friesland and on September 3, 1890 an older brother, Anton arrived also on the Friesland. With Anton were the rest of his children and some his wife's relatives. The oldest two children, Dominic and Margaret, arrived in New York with John B. earlier that year.
