This Read / Reed line in America dates from the mid-1600s with the arrival from England of John Read in Newport, RI then part of the Massachusetts Bay Colony. An important record of early family births, marriages and deaths is the book "Vital Records of the Town of Freetown, Massachusetts 1686 through 1890". Another important record is "Some Descendants of John Read, Senior of Newport, Rhode Island and Freetown, Massachusetts, 1646 - 1924". My Reed line comes down from Elijah Read, the 3rd great-grandson of John Read. Elijah migrated to the Ohio Territory [near Marietta, Ohio] from Freetown, Massachusetts via Vermont in the early 1800s.
