My family has, I believe, been in America for many generations. We have lost most of the old ones, who knew connections that are not written down and the real lineage is blurred because of adoptions and name changes. There was some background in stories my maternal grandmother, Lela Decker Huff, used to tell and her niece, Dora Huff Oguryk, who is 81, still remembers some of the names on that side of the family. My Mother's name was Sarah Gertrude Huff and her maternal grandfather was Asa Decker, a peer of Horace Greeley and a developer of Greeley, Colorado. I have no knowledge of his family tree or how he came to Colorado. My grandmother's mother, Dora Hart(sp?)Decker was brought to Colorado with her mother and siblings on a wagon train from upstate N.Y. My grandmother, Lela had several siblings. Amoung them were Ina(Dora's mother) Gladys, Brian and perhaps another brother. That's most of what I know about the Decker linage.
The Huff linage goes from my maternal grandfather, Omar Huff, to his father Hiram H. Huff of Flint, Michigan, before that of Ohio and possibly Pennsylvania. My Grandfather's mother, Sarah was not mentioned in Hiram's ledger(which I found after my Mother's death in 1992) and I can't remember her maiden name. My mother had a sister, Evelyn Huff Courtright(husb.Richard),still living, in Calabash, N.C.
The Dornbos line is short, as my father,Anthony Patrick, was born Steele(father,Vernon,of Niles,Mi.)and was adopted by my known Grandfather, Anthony"Ted"Dornbos(originally of Holland and spelled Doorenboss). They lived in Grand Rapids, Mich.,where I was born. My Paternal grandmother's maiden name was Sophia Frazee and I don't remember her parents names or her mother's maiden name. I beleive it was an Irish name (possibly O'Hara). She always said she was French and Irish. She had seven or eight siblings. I believe the family lived in or near Benton Harbor,Mi. My father had one sister, Eva Dalroot, who had one Daughter, Sharon Atkinson (husb, Jim) of Sand Lake, Mi. My Father, now deceased, changed his name to Steele sometime in the late 1970's or early 1980's and he persuaded my only brother Mark Anthony(deceased in 1986) to change his name to Steele, also. I have no information or background on the Steele line. My Grandmother never talked about that part of her past. It was not pleasant and she used to say her first husband, who apparently worked on the railroad, died in a rail yard accident when my father was a baby. My mother told me that he was alive in the early 1950's and that he tracked my father down and visited him at least once, when we lived in Big Rapids, Mi.
My brother is survived by one child, Jennifer May Steele, of Cape Coral, Fl. born 3/17/85. My sister Jacquelyn Faye Baker and I reside together in California. We have no children of our own. We do have two half-sisters(our father's progeny) Dennise Farren-Price Adcock (mother,Dorothy), of Sydney, Australia had four children, 3 boys and 1 girl(now deceased) and Gwendolyn Dornbos Thompson(mother, Verna),of Waco, Texas had 3 girls. This is most of what I know of the family history to date.
