Received this "wonderful' info in the mail today--it fills in a LOT of empty spaces on this family.. Jan

The History of the L. J. Camery Family At 210 So. Waterman Street stands a house unique in the city of Sutherland. Always known as the Camery home, this house has been occupied by members of one O'Brien County family since it was built in 1893 at a cost of $900.00 by L. J. Camery, the family now living in Sutherland. Long gone are the tennis court, original stable and carriage house, the orchard, gardens and apiary which were found on the grounds in the early days of Sutherland. The lot extended to High Street until the east part was sold a few years ago. The only remaining landmarks of those early days are the storm cave where fruits, vegetables and canned goods were stored, and a few of the large trees planted when the house was built. The house was originally a one-story cottage. In about 1905, Mr. Camery raised the roof, added a kitchen and built the large, square type house which today is still in good condition and repair. This house holds securely and secretly within its walls many memories dear to the members of this family.

Logan J. Camery, later known throughout O'Brien County, as L. J. Camery, came to Sutherland, Iowa, from Traer, in Tama County, in the fall of 1887, to work as a contractor and carpenter. His ancestry can be traced back to Great, Great Grandfather, John Messick, who served in the Revolutionary War. John Messick, who was a shoemaker by trade, lived in Virginia and died in Ohio at the age of 92. His daughter, Nancy, married Christian Camery, and to this union were born seven children. The third son, Christian Palmer Camery, who was born in 1829, married Anna Williams, who was the only one of ten children born in America. To this union were born nine children, one dying in infancy. Logan Camery, who was the fifth of these children, was born in Henry, Illinois, November 16, 1862. He came west with his parents, Mr. and Mrs. C. P. Camery, in a covered wagon. They settled in Traer, Tama County, Iowa, where Logan lived until he came to Sutherland.

(5 paragraphs on the John and Caroline Roberts family, Jennie Roberts' parents who were also early pioneers.)

Jennie Roberts was one of three children, all born in Tama County. Her father became the proprietor of a Livery Feed and Sale Stable in Sutherland on January 17, 1896) Jennie Roberts taught for a number of years in the schools of Grant and Highland Townships. A Certificate issued in 1889, authorized her to teach for only 4 months. Logan Jones Camery and Jennie Roberts were united in marriage in the evening on November 4, 1891, at the residence of the bride in Sutherland, the rev. F. L. Moore, M. E. pastor officiating. The residence was the small house on East Third Street where Bessie Martin now lives. After their marriage, Mar. and Mrs. Logan Camery moved into the Mrs. M. A. Achorn house, and in 1893 they moved into the house built by Mr. Camery in the newly platted Freimarks Addition.

(There are pictures shown on the pages: one of the one story cottage with Logan and Jennie and all 7 children and another after the 2nd story had been added)

In the early years after his marriage, L. J. Camery dealt in Windmills, Pumps and Tanks, Geared Windmills and Red Jacket Pumps being his specialties. Later he sold and put up Dodd and Struthers lightning rods on homes in the town and many farm buildings in O'Brien County. His team, identified by Bob, a black, stiff-necked horse, and his wagon especially equipped for this work became a common sight on the roads of O'Brien County in these early days. He continued throughout the years in salesmanship.

Mr. Camery's wife, Jennie, died on December 28, 1907, leaving him with a family of small children. He then took up the responsibility of caring for and rearing the children. He was assisted by his sister of Traer, Iowa, Cora Camery resigning her position in the public school there to be with the family until the older daughters were able to take over the household duties. Mr. Camery was a kind and loving father, and throughout the years was happiest when he had his family about him for holidays and special occasions. As the years passed a proud father witnessed the graduation from the Sutherland High School of each of his seven children. Always being a most interested and understanding father, L. J. Camery served several years on the School Board.

After their graduation from high school, the two older daughters taught a year or two in the rural schools of Liberty Township. In a few years, Lu, Ruth, and Rae Camery all were employed in the town of Sutherland in order to keep up the family home, living with their father. Ruth was first employed as cashier and bookkeeper by W.A. Plager for three years, one of the first merchants of Sutherland. She then worked for J. N. Slick, another businessman of early Sutherland, for about ten years. In 1928, Ruth Camery and Myrtle Kaiser purchased the J. N. Slick Store and a new business was opened in Sutherland, known as Camery and Kaiser. In 1938, Ruth Camery bought a partnership with Carl Johannsen in the Johannsen and Camery business, which operated until 1948, when Ruth and Lu Camery bought out the partnership of Carl Johannsen and moved into a new location to open a ready to wear and dry goods business, called "Camerys." On December 9, 1958, Lu and Ruth Camery sold out their business and retired, ending their active business life in Sutherland. The next morning it was 20 degrees below zero. What a morning not to have to go to the store! Ruth had served the people of the Sutherland Community for about forty years.

Soon after her graduation, Lu Camery entered a business school in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, after which time she was employed for several years in Hartley, Iowa, coming back to Sutherland where she was employed in the Sutherland State Bank.

Rae was also employed in this bank and later they were both employed in the Security State Bank. Later, Rae was employed away from Sutherland. From Rockford, Illinois, where she was a cashier in a bank, Rae Camery returned to Sutherland when she married Dr. R. C. Long, December 25, 1943. She became his assistant in his dental office until he retired in July, 1958. From this date, Sutherland has been without a dentist. Mrs. R. C. Long died July 31, 1974, and Dr. R. C. Long died August 27, 1974.

At the time of L. J. Camery's death, November 8, 1926, Lu, Ruth, and Rae were all employed in Sutherland. Myrl was a Civil Engineering student at Iowa State College, Ames, Iowa. The three youngest daughters were all school teachers, having been influenced and guided by teachers in their family background, as well as in their schooling. Neva was teaching at Dunlap, Iowa, Nina, at Ottumwa, and Maurine at Goldfield, Iowa.

This generation of the Camery family was first broken by the death of Myrl Camery. After he attended Iowa State College for three years, he was employed by the State Highway Commission. He was fatally burned in an explosion, which occurred at the Everist Construction Plant in Sioux City, Iowa, where he was an inspector. He died January 6, 1932, being survived by his six sisters.

Another great shock was experienced by her sisters when Lu Camery died suddenly of a heart attack on July 10, 1966, while she was vacationing at her summer place near Pine River in Minnesota. She will still be well remembered by many residents of Sutherland.

Maurine Camery, after teaching two years, married Paul R. Brown of Cedar Falls, Iowa. After teaching a few years, he studied for the ministry and will be remembered in O' Brien County where he served the Paullina and Gaza Methodist Churches. In Paullina, their oldest son, John, graduated from high school. Donald attended grade school and played in the high school band. John is now located in Durango, Colorado. He has a son, David, serving in the Air Force in Alaska, and a daughter, Camery. The younger son, Donald, graduated from high school in Clarksville, Iowa, where Rev. and Mrs. Brown have retired. Donald and family recently moved from New York City to Portland, Oregon. Rev and Mrs. Brown celebrated their 50th Anniversary on August 28 with Donald, his wife Allie, and grandson, Alexander Paul.

Nina Camery taught in the Ottumwa Schools for many years. She retired from her teaching position when she married John J. Beaty of Chicago, Illinois, in 1963. To be near her husband's family, she lived in Chicago for a few years after his sudden death on July 13, 1965. Later she moved to Madison, Wisconsin. Neva Camery also taught Homemaking and Mathematics for many years in Everly, Iowa, and other Iowa schools. She taught in O'Brien County when when was employed as Vocational Homemaking teacher in the Sutherland High School and Hartley High School. She retired in the fall of 1960 from her teaching position in the Hartley High School.

And, so, after these many years, four members of one man's family are still living--Maurine, Mrs. Paul R. Brown of Clarksville, Iowa; Nina, Mrs. John Beaty of Madison, Wisconsin; Ruth Camery and Neva Camery, are the two members of the family living at 210 So. Waterman in Sutherland, Iowa, O'Brien County.

Children born to Jennie and Logan Camery: Lulu Marguerite, Cora Ruth, Mryl Palmer, Rae Caroline, Neva Nadine, Nina Anna and Maurine Wilma. (all are now deceased)
