Notes for Lawerence Raymond Penoyer: From a newspaper Article dated August 28 1944 Sparta Gunner was wounded on his fiftieth mission Staff Sgt. Penoyer Has Distinguished Flying Cross Added To Previous Awards Of Air Medal And Three Clusters. Staff Sgt. Lawrence R. Penoyer 23, son of Mr. and Mrs. Frederick C. Penoyer Rome township (rout 2 Spartansburg), recently flew his fiftieth combat mission over Europe. His wife Mrs. Laura L. Penoyer, and sons, Norman, 15 months old, and Edward, 2 months old, also live in Spartansburg. A former paint sprayer in the G.E. refrigerator plant at Erie, he has been using a pair of .50 caliber guns to spray Nazi pursuits which attempted to interrrupt the bombings of key strategic targets ranging from western France through the Balkans and including such hot spotsas the harbor installations and submarine pens at Toulon, France; aircraft factories and airfields near Vienna, Austria and the oil refineries and storage facilities around Ploesti, Romanisa. Possibly his fiftieth mission was most memorable, for hsi group was commended by Maj. Gen. Nathan E. Twinning, Cammander of the 25th AAF, for their precision bombing of the railroad bridge there. But most thrilling was an attack on an aircraft factory at Wiener-Neustadt, Austria. For 14 minutes the flak smashed at the skin of the plane, without a break, "he said." Tw3o minutes before the target, a chunk blasted through the waist, hitting me in the left leg above the knee, there were fighters around and wasn't safe to leave the guns so I didn't say much until we outdistanced them. Then the boys gave me first aid. It meant a few days in the hospital but I am O.K. now. Can hardly see the scar. They counted 50 holes in the waist and tail after we landed. With all that metal going through my section I figure I was very lucky in just getting a nick.' Since flying overseas in January, 1944, he has won the Air Medal with three Oak Leaf Cluster. For his heroic action at Weiner-Neustadt he was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross and the Purple Heart.
