Tracing the Holt, Gandy, Barnett, Patterson of Ala, Ms.

Updated May 1, 2005

About Our Family Research

I have tried, tried to find the beginning of my family---William Martin Holt b 1844 Marshal co, Ms. The only thing that I can find is that he married Araminta Jane Pounds who was born 1847 Marshal co, Ms. I can find her on 1860-1900 census of Perry co, Ala but nothing on her husband--William Martin Holt. I have sent off to Ala/Ms Archives, written "Zillon" emails which so many wonderful people have tried to help me. I even hired someone to try to find him but NOTHING. I have gradually put together somewhat information on the Gandy/Barnett/Patterson/Pounds side of my family from internet, census, etc. Plus have met 3 "cousins" but nothing on the Holt family. I know that William Martin and Araminta had two children----Adeline b 1869, Wm Martin Jr b 1872 but nothing about their childhood. In the 1880 Perry co, Ala census was living with brother---Joseph Pounds---but nothing about the 8 yr old Martin, Jr or 11 year old Adeline. In 1900 Araminta Holt was living with Addie and Middleton Jordan in Perry co, Ala.
I came into the picture when Martin Jr and his wife (Nancy Gandy) left Mapleville, Ala in 1902-03 and came to Bowie co, Texas where raised their family. I have heard my dad (Orland Holt) say over, over when growing up that "hundred years from now no one will ever know I existed". I want to see that never happens plus that my children don't have to go thru what I have in knowing their family. So I am picking up with what I know and filling in my generation plus my cousins, etc.
I don't want to use the hard earned information of others so try not to put into my family that except where can help get my family out in case others are trying to find the same family I am. I have read other peoples information and appreciate their sharing it for people like me who need help although I do my best on my own. I trust that my hard earned information can help others.

I want to write down all the information on the William Martin Holt family that I have found. I have looked for him but know nothing. I know that Wm Martin Holt, Sr born 1844 Marshal co, Ms, married Araminta Jane Pounds born 1847 same place. I can trace her thru census, etc plus other peoples hard work but nothing on him. I know Araminta married around 1860-61, had daughter (Adeline that she lived with in 1900 Perry co, Ala census) also son (Wm Martin, Jr). Martin Jr left Mapleville, Ala in 1900, came to Bowie co, Texas where raised the family that was so much apart of my life. He and his wife (Nancy Everline Gandy) raised some wonderful children---all boys except one daughter that died in 1946. My dad said over, over again as I was growing up that "hundred years from now, mo one will ever know I existed". I want to make sure that doesn't happen because he was a wonderful man, leaving behind a legacy of honesty, loving, kind who loved his family very much---this man Orland Holt, wife Gladys Ivey Holt.

I am trying to update my genealogy thru my generation plus my kids, grandchildren. I hope to get the information down so they won't have to go thru what I have to just to get what I have now. However, still can't find anything on the Holt William Martin, Sr) that started all of this line of Holt's. I know they won't care for it now but reach my age???? then will be waiting there for them with all the love that I have put into it. They will know the families that helped shape them and even the ones they don't know. I want to leave stories, etc so they can know what we were all about.

The older William Martin Holt side of our family left no tracks behind for us to find. Believe me I have given it my best shot, written emails, sent letters, hired help even said prayers but still nothing on the older Martin Holt.
