Hello, I am Alex Rhine and doing research on four of my pedigree surnames. It has been a number of years since my father Walter F Rhine passed away. He always was telling stories about growing up in Washington D.C. during the early 1900's. Most of my relatives passed away during the Flu Epidemic of 1918. The Rhine"s and Brill"s were from D.C. and Maryland ( Howard Co., Anne Arundel Co.)while the Stone's and Williams's were from Prince William Co. Virgina. Their land is now part of the Quantico Marine Training Base for Officers near Dumfries, VA. Here is a story that may create some interest. During the Wilson adminstration they would have an Easter Egg Rolling on the front lawn of the White House. Only couples with children were allowed to enter. Many tourist would not have children with them and therefore could not enter. My father about nine or ten years old waited to see who would be turned away and then hire himself out as their child for 25 cents to get the unlucky couple inside. After making the entrance he would slip out the back gate change disguise and do it again. Industrious for a ten year old !!! Hope you enjoyed this little piece of history.
