The Rebecca Ann Brauns of North Dakota

Updated January 19, 2004

About Our Family Research

I am just starting researching my family history and am quite a novice. My dad was adopted by the Braun family when he was a baby in the year 1925 or so. His mother's name was Tillie Weiler and she was from the Richardton area as were the Brauns at that time. They(the Brauns) later moved to Mott and lived there until the last relative, Beata Braun Lutz died in Feb. 1996. Tillie was young and couldn't take care of him so she asked his godmother, Monica Braun if she could take him in. The Weiler history is sketchy and because of the adoption there is difficulty obtaining information. Tillie's father Adam Weiler 23 yrs married Raginia Gardner 19 yrs in Richardton ND Oct. 25, 1897. During the 1920 Census Adam was listed as head of household with Regina 14, Gloria 12, Tillie 10 3/4 yrs, Annie 9 yrs, Rose 7 and another child 5 yrs. No wife was in the household at that time. In the 1900 census Regina was listed as wife and 23 yrs old. And there was a son listed Adam, Jr. 1 year old.
Not sure about my dad's father if he was named or not.

My mother's family (Svihovec's)was from Bohemia and a relative has done quite a bit of research and the family tree goes back several generations. The Svihovec Family is planning a reunion in Hettinger in 2007 to open up a time capsule that was buried at the last reunion in 1977.

My mother's mother was Joyce Kolkemo maybe from the Bentley area. joyce's mom was Mary Knutson and her dad John Kolkemo. Mary and John were eventually divorced and he remarried Hannah Fish and they lived in Westfield, in Emmons County. John was born 12-20-1879 and died 9-29-1966. Mary went to live in Bemidiji with her bachelor son, Gerald. She must have died there. I don't know if she remarried or not.

So there it is in nutshell.
