Charlie's mangled body was found on the railroad tracks near his home. It was determined that he had been stabbed to death prior to being run over by a train.

According to Lila Rush:

Charlie had come in from farming, and found a moonshining still on their property. He went to clear it out, and he never came home. He was killed and put on the tracks. When the train came through, it dragged him to Hornsby, TN, when they found him.
