During the removal years of the Cherokee Nation, many Cherokee's fled to friends and acquaintenances in South Carolina.
Just prior to the Cherokee Removal the upper part of S.Carolina was still Cherokee Nation and was occupied by mixed blood intermarried white Cherokees. This area was popularly known as the Pendleton District. Adjoining this District was also the old Nintey Six District which also contained many intermarred mixed blood Cherokees. One of which who appeared in Abbeville in 1840 was Daniel Ridge and his wife Amanda Cowan who was the daughter of Samuel Cowan's First marriage, Samuel Cowan's second marriage (1827) was to Jane Britt, who came into the marriage with two other children.(Amanda's Stepbother and Stepsister) Amanda also had half-brothers and half-sisters who were the product of Samuel Cowan and Jane Britt's 1827 marriage.
Skar the Law Sky Ridge was listed on the 1835 Removal Census of the Cherokee Nation living in Brasstown NC, near Timotlee, as a Fullblood with a Fullblood wife and 7 Fullblood children. Two of these Children appeared on the 1840 Census of S.Carolina, Thomas and Daniel, the others went West.
Land records in North Carolina show that Loyd Welch(Chief of the Eastern Band) ended up with Skar the Law Sky Ridge's 200 acres along Buffalo Creek in Cherokee (now Graham) County.
Skar the Law Sky Ridge is purported to be a brother to the famous Cherokee Chief Major Ridge, and uncle to the famous John Ridge, and Brig Gen Chief Stand Watie of the Southern Cherokees. Other Ridge Families living within the Cherokee Nation East and thought to also be brothers to Major Ridge include Ridge of Talking Rock Creek Ga.(1835 Census) and Jesse Ridge of Etowah Ga.(1835 Census). All total there were Five (5) households with the surname Ridge listed on the 1835 Removal Census of the Cherokee Nation East(Henderson Roll) all thought to be related. Major Ridge[Rome Ga.], his son John Ridge[Running Waters Ga.] Jesse Ridge[Etowah Ga.], Skar the Law Ridge [Brasstown NC], and Ridge[Talking Rock Creek Ga.]
Daniel Ridge, along with his sons William and John Henry, enlisted in the confederacy at Timotlee [known as Tomato Town Cherokee Nation] with Co.G 14 Regiment SC Infantry. They were enlisted by Daniels wifes (Amanda Cowan) brother Capt Cowan of Abbeville SC. William was killed at Petersburg, Daniel became Robt E. Lees male nurse, but died himself at Camp Winder Va. John Henry was captured and placed in Harts Island NY prison.
John Henry Ridge married Martha Moore Greatgrandaughter of Sarah Wilkerson 1/2 blood Cherokee daughter of Col Wilkerson Comandant of Ft.Prince George in the Cherokee Nation. Sarah's 1/2 blood Cherokee Brothers named John Wilkerson and Tom Wilkerson both married Coo Ta Yah.
The Cherokee nation specifically "Chief Major Ridge" was the signatory to the Treaty of Ft. Jackson 1817-1819 giving this upper part of S.Carolina (The Anderson/Pickens/Oconee) area in exchange for promises of indedpendence on their Georgia Lands.
But once again Andrew Jackson betrayed the Cherokee
