During the removal years of the Cherokee Nation, many Cherokee's fled to friends and acquaintenances in South Carolina.

Just prior to the Cherokee Removal the upper part of S.Carolina was still Cherokee Nation and was occupied by mixed blood intermarried white Cherokees. This area was popularly known as the Pendleton District. Adjoining this District was also the old Nintey Six District which also contained many intermarred mixed blood Cherokees. One of which who appeared in Abbeville in 1840 was Daniel Ridge and his wife Amanda Cowan who was the daughter of Samuel Cowan's First marriage, Samuel Cowan's second marriage (1827) was to Jane Britt, who came into the marriage with two other children.(Amanda's Stepbother and Stepsister) Amanda also had half-brothers and half-sisters who were the product of Samuel Cowan and Jane Britt's 1827 marriage.
