Peter "Pete" Harrison, 68, died Monday at his home in Maple City, surrounded by his family after a brief but courages battle against cancer. Pete was born in England and came to this country as an infant with his parents, Patrick and Kitty Harrison. They lived in Grand Haven where he graduated from Grand Haven High School in 1948. He then sailed as a merchant seaman on the Great Lakes and abroad until he went into the U.S. Army during the Korean Conflict and he served in Germany. On August 30, 1951, he married Shirley "Sal" VerHoeks at Fort Sills, Oklahoma. After leaving the army, he graduated from Western Michigan University. He was employed by Certified Public Accounting Firms in Chicago, Ill and Grand Rapids until taking a position as treasurer of the L. Perrigo Co. in Allegan, Mi. In 1979, Peter and his family moved to Traverse City where they owned and operated the Best Western Four Seasons Motel. He was active in the early beginnings of the Convention Bureau and the VASA. He had avid interests in sailing, flying his plane, and his recently planted chestnut orchard at the "cave" in Maple City. Pete is survived by his wife, Sal: their six children, Petra (Christopher) Harrison, Jerry( Shane Boland Harrison),Sean of Fremont, California, Peter (Evelyn) Harrison, Pat (Debi) Harrison, and Megan (Bill) Harrison Barnes: Three beloved Grandchildren, Caitlin, Seamus, and Kylie - children of Jerry and Shane Harrison: A brother, John ( Sue), of Grand Haven, and a sister-in-law, Harriet VanSchaik of Marco Island, Fla. He was preceded in death by his parents, and brothers, Jerome and Patrick. Pete has been cremated at his request. A Memorial Service for family and friends will be held at a later date. His friends Bandy Schmerhiem and Jack Tokie, fellow pilots, will fly his ashes over his beloved Leelanau County. As Pete was always thinking of others, Please make memorial contributions to the Father Fred Foundation in his name. He will be greatly missed by his family, friends, and employees. Arrangements are by the Traverse City Chapel of Covell Funeral Homes.
