Jan Boerema (son of Weikke Eppes Vos) was born February 06, 1854 in Usquert, Netherlands, and died January 10, 1948 in Ravenna,Muskegon Co., Mich. He married (1) Janneke Bloem on October 1878 in Warffum, Gron., Netherlands.

Age at Death: 92 years 11 months 4 days Cause of Death: Chr. Myocarditis Occupation: Retired. Jan(John) Boerema and wife Jennuka or Jennie Bleom in 1885. They arrived in New York on May 4, 1885( obit states 1887) aboard the ship "W. A. Scholten. John was the first member of the Boerema family to be able to read and write. In the early 1900's John dropped the second 'E' in Boerema to make it easier to read, this is how the Surname 'Boerma' was retained.
John married a second time after the death of Jennuka to Dora Brown and had 3 more children.
According to Crockery Twp. Clerk's office the plot owned by John (Jan) R. Boerema has only 2 people on record as being buried there, however there is also Dora Boerma died Dec. 31, 1940 and Robert Boerma (baby) died August 20, 1927 listed as being buried in Nunica Cemetery. There is no notation of plot numbers however, it is possible that they are buried in the John R. Boerema plot.
According to obituary, John farmed in Nunica for a short time and then took up carpentry for a trade. He lived in Nunica untill Dora's death in 1940 and then lived with his daughter, Gertrude Maycroft, in Ravenna. At the time of his death at age 93, he was survived by 9 children, his sister, Jennie Ossewaarde, 44 grandchildren, 56 great grandchildren and 2 great great grandchildren.
