Notes from: Glenn R. Hartman, San Antonio, Texas:
William Henry Riley served in the War for Southern Independence. Waul's Texas Legion Company C Willis Cavalry Battalion. He became Sergeant and was a Bugler by the Wars end. He served in Tennessee and Mississippi. He served at Vicksburg but was with the Unit that escaped before it fell. This was the only Unit to have escaped. Possibly he was with Nathan Bedford Forrest at his surrender. He enlisted in Gonzales County, Texas. He also served in McCullochs Texas Cavalry for the first year of the War. This Unit is thought to have served in the invasion of New Mexico at Glorietta Pass. My grandfather Charles Henry Riley told to me a story that he was told by William Henry Riley of men dying from their tongues swelling and turning black due to lack of water. This could possibly relate to service in the West. He served the entire War and received a Confederate Pension from the State of Texas.
We thank you Randy Hartman for sharing your notes and the stories "handed down."
William Henry Riley is buried in the Marcelina Cemetery, Floresville, Wilson County, Texas.
