Notes for Hiram Abiff Riley: Hiram Abiff Riley and his wife Elizabeth Bachman were early settlers in Gonzales County by 1852 in the Leesville area where their children grew up and attended school.
Hiram was born in Georgia. Later his family moved to Carroll County, Mississippi where he married January 25, 1838 Elizabeth Bachman. She was the ninth of eleven children of John Bachman (sometimes spelled Baughman) and his wife Mary Catherine Barbara Binnicker.
Hiram and Elizabeth's first five children were born in Carroll County, Mississippi; the other four were born in Gonzales County. Before Hiram and Elizabeth went to Texas in 1852 several of the Bachmans and Caraways had preceded them. Her sister Maria, Bachman had married John Atkinson and moved to Texas in 1835 where they settled in Austin's Colony.
In 1881 after almost thirty years of farming in Gonzales County the Rileys with only two of their children left at home moved on west to a place near Campbellton in Atascosa County where they spent the remainder of their lives. Hiram Riley died the year 1891. Elizabeth survived her husband more than ten years. She lived with her son Charles Samuel until her death in 1901.
Hiram Abiff and Elizabeth Bachman Riley, their son Charles Samuel, his wife nancy Moore and Jesse H. Stokes, son of Abner Stokes and Minnie Bon Riley, were buried in the cemetery area on the old Riley homestead a few miles east of Campbellton, in Atascosa County, Texas. (Lundquist Ranch)
