SYNOPSIS: The earliest known Riley immigrants to the Chesapeake Bay Area were the three brothers--Garrett, Miles, and Thomas--who arrived in Northern Virginia in 1635. The oldest surviving Riley Colonial Records and Land Grants of Maryland and Virginia, which were written and dated in the late 1600s and early 1700s, are those of the immigrants or their descendents. Male Christian names used by some of the early Rileys were Biblical names, such as Samuel, Pharoah, Jeremiah, and Eliphaz. However, traditional Irish given names passed down by the O'Reillys (Anglicized as Reyley or Riley) in Ireland, were Brian (Briain), Farrell (Ferghail), Hugh (Aodh), Miles (Maolmordha), and John (Seaán). The Anglicized versions of these given names were used extensively in the early Riley generations. Many of the Rileys of the Tidewater Frontier moved in and out of the Colonies now known as Maryland and Virginia and were related. In addition to the three Rileys immigrants mentioned by name above, there were other early Rileys who came to the Colonies. Altogether, eight different Riley lines are discussed in the book. They and their descendents are discussed by the writer from the time of arrival of their immigrants to approximately 1850. After 1850, all of the Riley lines have multiplied so greatly that tracing their living descendents to the present day is an impossible task. From 1850 to the present, the writer discusses only his own branch of Rileys. Such a comprehensive analysis of the early Riley families of Colonial Maryland and Virginia has never been attempted prior to this publication, and the writer hopes that his book and its documentation will benefit all persons who can claim descent from an early Riley family of the Tidewater Frontier.
This book is printed in two hard-bound volumes and consists of 1,904 pages.
