Notes for Ocie Columbus Rinehart: _____________________________________________________________________________________ Ocie Columbus Rinehart was born on June 26, 1873. Very little is known about his early childhood. But given the type of land he was born into in Alabama, he must have had a happy childhood. It was a pleasant place to grow up in. Evidently, he was a typical boy. He liked to tell stories about the time as a young boy he and one of his brothers decided the best way to not have to attend school would be to burn the school down, which they proceeded to do.
Ocie was married three times. First to Willie Woodal, with whom he had Lemer, Eula, William P, Curtis and Jessie. Willie died within a month of giving birth to Jesse. Jesse went to live with the Webb family. Ocie married Josephine Butler for a very short period, and then married Cora May Johnson. Their marriage produced seven children. Cordie May, Earl Edward, Eurdist Bennet, Thomas Oddist, Earnest Daryl, Myrtle Louise, and Essie Bell. Again the generations in the 55-65 age group can vividly recount events and situations involving most of these Rineharts.
Ocie Rinehart seemed to have one creed: work hard, be honest, and love your family. He was truly the head of this generation of Rineharts. It was common that each Sunday the whole family would gather at one farm and enjoy a big Sunday dinner and usually a game of softball, involving most of the uncles and cousins and at times even Ocie. It was also common that when Ocie "spoke," his children and grandchildren listened to his wisdom. Ocie moved from Cherokee County, Alabama and as so many before him he migrated westward to Comanche, Comanche County, Texas. From there, he moved the famly to Rule, Hamlin County, Texas. Then to Snyder, Scurry County, Texas.
He and Cora May settled about 10 miles north of Snyder where he farmed until he retired in 1949. He was fortunate to have oil discovered beneath his land, allowing him and Cora May to retire to a comfortable retirement at Hermleigh, Texas. Ocie died in 1956 and Cora May died in 1967 in Scurry County.
