Notes for William Andrew Mayes: William was a stone mason. He never owned land in Bell County. He moved to Washington County before 1850 and to Bell County by 1854. He is listed as a tax payer that year. He had 13 children with his wife, Mary Amanda, who died in childbirth with the youngest, Laura Amanda, who died four days later. They lived on Owl Creek. William Andrew took his young son, William Walter Mayes to his sister in Brady to raise. Will was about 2 years when this happened. William died about a year later. He had remarried and the children walked to Bander a or Uvalde County to live with relatives, perhaps, Mary Adella. He is buried in Moffat Cemetery in an unmarked grave.
