 Includes NotesNotes for Alexander Smith:
info for Alexander and his descendants are derived from the book: "The Smi th Family of Buckingham County, Virginia 1735-1900" by Nancy Claire Wilson Moulton. Include s the latest update. The greatest appreciation and expressions of gratitude are extended to N ancy for her great accomplishment in collecting and publishing this book, the most comprehens ive work on the Alexander Smith family of Virginia to this date.

From Lois Anne Smith's Journal: Smith Family Record (page 3) [We have only a few old plats , which were in the hands of the County Surveyor, and filed here after the burning (burning o f Court House and Clerk's office of Buckingham, in 1869). I find among these a tract of 48 7 acres belonging to Alexander Smith, made in 1780, and described as "on Branches of Wreck Is land Creek." I also find a tract of 1000 acres in name of Col. Wm. Smith, described as adj . John Mallory, Geo. Burks, Col. John and Joseph Cabell. No creeks or rivers referred to. T here are several other tracts in name of Smiths, but no local description that would indicat e their location. - Carrie S. Hubbard, 35 (sic) March 1936, Clerk Circuit Court of Buckingha m Co. - (page 39).

I have a reply I wrote to Wm. Ronald Cooke, Jr. c/o Colonial Craftsman, Richmond, Virginia . In the Genealogical Handbook, he stated he had data on land owners of Buckingham county, V a. from Shadrack Smith owning 500 acres of land in Buckingham Co. in 1782 and dividing it wit h these two sons by 1787, giving equally to each 250 acres. He says he has the name of the f ather. He also stated that George Smith was living in Tenn. in 1814 but still owned 78 1/2 a cres in Buckingham. ...He thinks the brother, Shadrack, also moved to Tennessee as he was ou t of the county in 1812, when his name disappeared from the record. This land in Buckingha m Co. was described as being about twenty-seven miles west of the courthouse and on Wreck Isl and Creek. - Mrs . S. B. Wilson (Clara J. Wilson), 15 Feb 1936 -(page 40).

From TN Smithology: Mary Drucilla Smith's Family Bible in in the possession of Mrs. William S tell of Russellville, Alabama (who also has the Ramsey Bible). This Bible record claims Shad rack Smith and Nancy Bailey as her parents and Alexander Smith and Diana Phelps as her grandp arents. Mary Drucilla named her first child Alexander Smith Grisham, probably for her grandf ather.

Comment - Nancy Moulton: Could this Alexander be related to our Smith family? George Lumpkin , Shadrack and Drucilla, with their families were among the early settlers of Wilson County.

21 Aug 1989 - James Cooke: I am researching a "Smith" family line which includes the name "By rd", as well as other unusual names like "Larkin","Cary" and "Nulton". Robert Smith (ca 1729 -1776) m. (1) ?, (2 ) Elizabeth James, 1763. Issue: Byrd (1760-1826) m. (1) Gillea Arnold, 1 789, dau of Moses - (2) Sally Dowdy, 1822. (other children of Robert: Robert J. 9 Nov 1989 - Mildred Miller Marshall: Research is being done on the theory that George L. Smi th was probably the son of Robert Smith Sr. will 1776, Cumberland Co., VA. There are severa l died in Wilson Co., Tenn (D.B.U. 1839-1841) of the sale of "dower land of Elizabeth Rich fo rmer wife of George L. Smith deceased." The names on these deeds were John A. Smith, E. L. S mith, George Smith, Harris Smith, Bird Smith, P. P. Smith and Robert B. Smith. Since Rober t Smith Sr. named among other children, Bird, George and Robert, these deeds lend support t o this theory.

5 Feb 1990 - Mildred Miller Marshall: I spent hours in the Fairfax Library on Alexander Smit h and Phelps. Very hard to find anything! The Mormon library here has the Virginia patent r ecords. I found Isaac Smith heir a law to Alexander Smith deceased in 1798. I was thrilled ! You did not list him as a son so assume you did not have this record. Will do Goochland a nd Chesterfield Co. next. Will let you know if I find anything.

1 April 1995 - James R. McMichael: Going back one more generation on my Ewing line, the mothe r of James Ewing, (who had 19 children), was Sarah Smith. Her father was Robert Smith. Th e information that I have indicates he might be from Cumberland County, Virginia. I think th at Robert Smith and Alexander Smith could very well be related.
-------------------------------------------
22 May 1995 - Kenneth Smith: I have a few other bits of information that I am sending. I don 't remember who sent them to me nor when.

[Appendix III - The Shadrack Smith Family: There is a conflict in the records concerning ance stry of Shadrack Smith who was born in Buckingham Co., Va. 25 Nov 1772. The bible record o f Nancy Strother Smith , who married James Watkins Lee in 1894, says that Shadrack was son o f Shadrack's and Mary (Byrd) Smith. Opposing this we have a bible record of Martha Ann Smith , Shadrack's daughter, who married in 1830 Alexander Ramsey; she says that Shadrack's parent s were Alexander and Diana (Phelps) Smith.

Buckingham was a "burned out" County and we cannot find the records needed to prove the line . Indications are that the Ramsey Bible was right, for we find in the 1810 Census of Bucking ham, living near Shadrack , was a widow, Diana Smith, over age of 45 with 1 male 26-45 an d 2 females 10-16. She was also on the 1800 Tax List. This was probably Alexander's widow , for we find in the list of their children an Isaac Phelps Smith; the youngest son, Benjami n A., may have been Benjamin Alexander.

In the Nancy Strother Smith Bible Records there are only three children listed: George Lumpki ns Smith, who = Elizabeth Harris; Shadrack, who =Nancy Bailey; and Drusilla, who = Charles Ri ch. Among the children of George Lumpkins we have a Byrd White Smith and a John Alexander . In succeeding generations we have many repititions of the given names Byrd, Alexander, Sha drack, Phelps, and Diana. It is possible that the Shadrack-Byrd marriage provided the parent age for Alexander, who may have named his son, Shadrack, for his father, Shadrack. We need m ore data to clarify this ancestry.

Appendix III - Genealogy of Shadrack Smith Family:. . . Alexander Smith, soldier in America n Revolution, in Virginia Militia; (see Vol . 8 page 405 - REVOLUTIONARY SOLDIERS OF VIRGINI A; also D.A.R. #290703, 290704, 413587) b c 1756 in Va.; d between 1790 and 1800; = Diana Phe lps; had issue:. . .

10 Aug 1995 - David J. Temple: It appears Alexander Smith never filed his papers to obtain th e final patent on his 487 acres he had surveyed in 1780. He died between 1782 and 1783. Hi s heirs went to court to obtain the final patent. I have not tried the Virginia State Archiv es for that record. Is this 487 acres part of the 500 acres split between George and Shadrac k Smith by 1787? I don't know.

The proof of the death dates for Alexander Smith are from the Virginia Land Tax Records and P ersonal Property Tax Records for Buckingham County. In the Land Tax books for 1782, Alexande r Smith is recorded on page 22 with 500 acres. This record is dated 20 May 1782. The next L and Tax Book available is 1787. Jonas Jones is the Commissioner on 18 July 1788 for Distric t No. 2. On page 10 are the listings for George Smith and Shadrack Smith, each identified a s "son of Alexr" and with 250 acres of land each. Alexander Smith is never mentioned again . In the Personal Property Tax Lists the 1782 list taken by William Duiguid on 9 April 178 2 shows Alexander Smith with four slaves. The 1783 list shows Diany Smith on page 22 but I c ould not find a date, so the estimate is by December 1783 (Alexander was deceased) in order f or Diana to be taxed at all. Support for Diana being the wife of Alexander Smith is given b y the fact that 4 of the 5 slave names listed beside her name are the same as those listed be side Alexander's name the previous year.

Next door to Diany Smith is listed an Isaac Smith with 2 slaves, 1 white tithe, 2 black tithe s, 4 horses and 7 cattle.

5 Apr 1997 - James R. McMichael: Shadrack Smith is the great grandfather of both of my Ewin g grandparents, James William and Mary Ella. And, you know that James Ewing married Shadrack 's daughter Nancy.

Alexander Ewing of Davidson County, Tennessee is the father of James Ewing. Sarah "Sally" Sm ith married Alexander Ewing about 1788. The marriage could have been in Virginia or Davidso n County, Tennessee. Robert Smith and Sarah Y. Clemmons are the parents of Sarah Smith.

James Ewing, no doubt moved to Wilson County, because his father, Alexander, gave him 640 acr es of land. But, how did he meet Nancy Smith? The best that I can tell Shadrack Smith live d a short distance from Noreen, Tennessee. That is several miles from the farm where James f armed. As the crow flies, it was probably at least 12 miles between James' farm, and where S hadrack Smith lived. About 1812, that was a far piece to travel for an evening date. If Sha drack was a relative of James' mother, then it would be reasonable to think that James coul d have visited Shadrack's family. Well, it is interesting to think about things like how di d people meet and etc..

14 Apr 1997 - Mildred M. Marshall: David Temple of Texas sent me the inventory of Diana Smith 's estate and Littleberry Patteson's Will. Perhaps Diana Smith was living with her daughter , Matilda Patteson, in her old age. Why else was her inventory recorded in Campbell Co., Va. ? This inventory gives us the names of Diana's heirs who were living in 1825. I believe Cha rles Ritch and Wm. Flowers married daughters of Diana and Alexander Smith. It had never occur red to me to check records in Campbell Co., Va. for Smiths!

3 Jun 1997 - James R. McMichael: I have enclosed a few pages from a book I have had for a num ber of years. That book (The Kith and Kin of Captain James Leeper and Susan Drake, his wife ) is the basis for me thinking that my Robert Smith is related to my Shadrack Smith . At lea st it makes for some interesting thoughts. (Several pages of information about Robert Smit h and Saray Y. Clemmons family: Elizabeth Smith m. John Criddle; Sarah Smith m. Alexander Ewi ng; Alexander Smith m. Sarah Jane Leeper; Nancy L. Smith m. Richard Hightower.)

23 Jun 1997 - Charles R. Smith: DAR/ALEXANDER THE PATRIOT - My recent check with the record s section of the DAR indicates that a total of 7 applications have been received based upon t he Revolutionary Patriotic Service of our Alexander Smith - one thru the Shadrack line an d 6 thru Alexander Cheatwood Smith. The one thru Shadrack came from Mrs. Jesse Ramsey Stel l (#235206) of Russellville, Alabama in 1977 (copy attached). She evidently attached a cop y from a court booklet of public service claims as documentation. I also found an abstract r ecord of the claim (attached), Ruth Evelyn Miller Lanford of Apple Grove, VA submitted her ap plication in 1935 (#290770) based incorrectly, I think, on the basis that her grandfather Ale xander Cheatwood Smith was a son of Alexander (attached). Note that her data indicated Alex . Jacob to be one person vice father-son. I have not seen the others submitted thru his line , but if similar these could have led to the confusion about Alexander Cheatwood being a so n of Alexander (based upon an inaccurate birth date of 1784). Note she also submitted base d upon the record of a different Alexander Smith.

THE ALEXANDER SMITH FAMILY GROUP - In the absence of other Buckingham Co., records I have fro m the micorilm plotted the list of tithables and the land tax lists of Smiths for each year f rom 1782 (initial ) to 1825 and beyond from this data I believe there is evidence of an othe r brother OBEDIAH - and if true was apparently not alive in 1825 when the estate distributio n of Diana was made. He was on the list of tithables as a minor in the household of John Who rley in 1783 (within a year following the death of his father if it was Alexander). John Wor ley's land adjoined the 487 acres of Wreck Island Creek surveyed for Alexander on 10 May 1870 . Obediah was listed as an adult on each tithables list from 1786 thru 1803...where he disap peared . In each one of those years his listing was on a line next to one or all of the know n members of the family group (Diana - Isaac - Jacob - George - Shadrick). He never appeare d on the land tax list but surveyors notes show him with land on Wreck Island Creek adjoinin g James Hundley in 1794. His location after1803 ???

From the DAR application by Jessie Ramsey Stell, dated 17 Jan 1977: ANCESTORS SERVICES - M y ancestor's services in assisting in the establishment of American Independence during the W ar of the Revolution were as follows: Alexander Smith of Buckingham Co., VA, furnished 300 lb s. of grass fed beef on August 30, 1781 to the army.

County records place Alexander Smith in Buckingham County Virginia as early as 1765. Despit e the fact that Buckingham is a "burned county" (i.e. records and courthouse destroyed by fir e) the Primary and Secondary sources listed above provide evidence of the existence of Alexan der, his wife Diana and a household of children. In 1782 Alexander is listed on the persona l property tax lists. In 1783 he is not on the list; we surmise that he is dead. But Dian a is of record, and she reports four slaves by name that were on Alexander's lists by name th e year before. We believe Alexander and Diana were husband and wife and had extensive househo ld. However, the most helpful genealogical document was turned up by David Temple of Texas i n 1997. He discovered in Campbell County Virginia records, (Campbell is adjacent to Buckingh am and Appomattox Counties), the Estate Settlement papers for Diana Smith, deceased. The doc uments had been filed in 1825 by Jacob Smith, who was serving as Administrator of the Estate . They included inventory, appraisal, and distribution of Diana's possessions. Specificall y identified as heirs in the records are seven children: Isaac, Jacob, George L., Shadrack, D rucilla, a daughter who married William Flowers, and Matilda. By this time George L., Shadra ck, and Drucilla had moved to Tennessee, along with their families; abundant records from Wil son, Smith and DeKalb Counties in Tennessee bear witness to their life there. And the eviden ce in Virginia records leads us to believe that Diana and Alexander had another son, Obediah . The fact that Diana's estate did not include him may indicate that he was already decease d and without issue. Nevertheless, we believe the evidence is strong enough to list him in t he family record.

5 Sep 1997 - Thomas G. Webb: I looked at some of the personal property tax lists for Buckingh am County. The names of the slaves in Alexander 1782 and Diana 1783 are the same, which is c onvincing evidence to me. I had hoped to find an older Shadrack, but did not. There are som e Phelps families listed, which leads me to think that Phelps was probably the spelling for D iana's name. I do notice, however, that Diana is spelled several different ways.

16 Sep 1997 - Thomas G. Webb: I have gone completely through the Buckingham County land tax l ists from 1782 through 1819. I enclose a page with a summary of what I found. The main find ings are that Diana Smith apparently owned no land; Alexander's 500 acres was divided betwee n George and Shadrack. She had a separate household in personal property tax lists. This ha s certainly eliminated any question I had about Alexander being the father of George, for h e and Shadrack are noted as "son of Alexander" almost every year for 16 years. Was the Isaa c Smith of 1782 with 410 acres a son of Alexander? Or could he have been a brother or even th e father of Alexander? He is not in 1787 or after. The Isaac Smith listed in 1792 and 1793 m ay be the son of Alexander. I believe the Jacob Smith first listed in 1805 is the son of Ale xander and Diana.

[Summary of Buckingham County, Virginia Land Tax Lists, 1782-1819:
