Notes for George Lumpkin Smith: _______________________________________________ From Lois Anne Smith's Journal: Smith Family record (page 3).
[Smithville and Smith Fork Creek, Tennessee are named for the descendants of George L. and El izabeth Harris Smith. Byrd W. Smith, son of George L. and Elizabeth Harris Smith, lived at t he head of Smith Fork Creek near Statesville. William Byrd Smith, nephew of Byrd W. Smith, w as born at Smith Fork, Wilson Co., Tennessee (page 12).
George Lumpkin Smith was among the first settlers on Smith Fork Creek. The first settlers i n Wilson County settled on creeks. This settlement was made from 1797-1802 (page 17).
I will begin with George Lumpkin Smith (name of your grandfather and one that went through th e family). This George Lumpkin was my great grandfather and your great, great grandfather . He was born in Buckingham Co., VA, where he married Elizabeth Harris. He emigrated to Ten nessee early in the century. He made corn and tobacco in 1810 where the little town of State sville, Tennessee now stands. From there he moved and settled what was later known as the W . H. Tribble place. He died and was buried at that place in 1826, 1 1/4 miles below Statesvi lle on Smith's Fork. His widow Elizabeth, known as Aunt Betsy, married Charles Rich in her o ld days. She was buried at Prosperity near where she died 3 1/2 miles below Statesville. Th e children of George Lumpkin and Elizabeth were Byrd White who married Martha McAdoo, your gr eat grandfather and mother; Harris, my grandfather (will tell more about him later); John Ale xander; George called "Big Uncle George", William; and Robert. Robert settled in Austin, Tex as, many years ago and engaged in mercantile business and he became very rich. I guess he ha d offspring if we knew how to find them. - Letter from Mrs. J. W. Lee (Nancy Strather Smith ) great granddaughter of George Lumpkin Smith of Revolutionary times, 25 Aug 1934 (page 21).
I went to Statesville, Saturday - I went to the place that your mother said George Lumpkin Sm ith that came to Tennessee in 1809, was buried - I found a slab that had the letters G. L. S . on it but no dates, just the letters. I really believe this is the marker to his grave. I t is a slab probably 18 in. x 30 in. These letters were placed on the slab like this (pictur e of initials across top). I am sure Smith had never been on it. They were pretty little le tters, very plain. Also I went to see Cousin Virgin Armstrong and Cousin Ann James. I wis h you could visit them and talk to them. They could tell you many things about our great gra ndparents, Byrd and Martha (Patsy as everyone called her). I have her picture - will see Del ay sometime about it. Cousin Virgin and Ann did not agree on where Martha McAdoo came from , Coz. Virgin said VA, and that she and Byrd were married when they came here and that they r ode a jenet - one would walk while other rode. Coz. Ann said Martha came from N. C., and I a m sure from the dates you sent me they were not married. It might have been George Lumpkin a nd Elizabeth Harris that rode the donkey. - Letter from Myrtis Jennings, 10 Sep 1934 (page 33 ).
D. A. R. Chapter at Russellville, Alabama is named for Matthew Smith (probably kin to Georg e Lumpkin) - lots of descendants live there (page 35).
I have a reply I wrote to Wm. Ronald Cooke, Jr. c/o Colonial Craftsman, Richmond, Virginia . In the Genealogical Handbook, he stated he had data on land owners of Buckingham Co. in 17 82 and dividing it with these two sons by 1787, giving equally to each 250 acres. He says h e has the name of the father (Alexander Smith). He also stated that George Smith was livin g in Tenn. in 1814 but still owned 78 1/2 acres in Buckingham. He thinks the brother Shadrac k, also moved to Tennessee as he was out of the county in 1812, when his name disappeared fro m the record. This land in Buckingham Co., was described as being about twenty-seven miles w est of the court house and on Wreck Island Creek. - Mrs. S. B. Wilson (Clara J. Wilson) 15 Fe b 1936 (page 40).
Mrs. Alice V.D. Pierrepont, Violet Bank, Petersburg, VA, wrote me that she had a good deal o f Harris and Smith data. She said she had in 1800, a land owner, George Smith listed, the on ly one by that name of George, but his middle name not given...She says there is nothing on B uckingham except what she had gotten together, so I am anxiously awaiting the outcome - Mrs . S. B. Wilson (Clara J. Wilson) 17 June 1936, (page 41).
See letter file under B's for announcement of The Collected Records of Buckingham Co., Virgi nia (1761-1869) by Mrs. A. V. D. Pierrepont (page 41).
George L. Smith's Estate - I do not find any will of the estate but do find a report of perso nal property sale of this estate reported by George Smith, the administrator of the estate, a nd I presume this is the same estate you are interested in. This account of sale was recorde d on 11 November 1826. I also find a report made of money on hand due William H. Smith, a mi nor heir of George L. Smith reported by George Smith, Guardian. On this same day, 1 Januar y 1828, a like report of money on hand due Robert B. Smith, a minor heir of George L . Smith , was reported by Byrd W. Smith, Guardian. I also find in September 1829 the court appointe d Commissioners to settle with George Smith, deceased, but did not have time to look furthe r for the final account of the settlement with the administrator. - C. O. Dodson, Clerk, Coun ty Court, Wilson Co., Lebanon, Tennessee, 28 Feb 1936 (page 43).
