[Elizabeth Harris born 1772 (1850 census of Wilson Co., Tenn. listed her age as 78). She mar ried in 1789, George Lumpkin Smith, born ca 1767, a son of Alexander Smith and Diana Phelps . (Records in Virginia Museum on campus of Univ. of Richmond, "Elizabeth Harris, wife of Geo rge L. Smith,was a daughter of John Harris and his wife Mary of Buckingham, Va.")
In the fall of 1810, following a bad crop year, a group of neighbors in the Vaughn Creek sect ion of Prince Edward Co., across the Appomattox River from Bent Creek area, decided to move w estward to Tenn. Edmund Harris and John Harris, cousins of Elizabeth, both grandsons of Davi d Harris, a brother of Thomas Harris of Prince Edward Co. had already settled there in 1806 a nd were writing back of fertile soil and promising country available. The group was compose d of Meadors, Hawkins, Harris, Gillam, Patteson, Woodson and others. In this wagon train wer e Elizabeth Harris, her husband, George Lumpkin Smith and their children. Also in this grou p was James Gilliam, his wife, Frances Hopkins (See Gilliam family history) and several of th eir children including their daughter, Martha T. Gilliam, who married Gideon Harris, the grea t nephew of our Thomas Harris of Prince Edward Co. We are indebted to Gideon Harris and hi s mother, Elizabeth who preserved the family history left by Thomas Harris.

As stated previously, Elizabeth Harris (Smith) (Rich) was shown in 1850 census in Wilson Co. , Tenn (deed book 1839-1841) of the sale of "Dowerland of Elizabeth Rich, former wife of Geor ge L. Smith, deceased". The names on these deeds are John A. Smith, E. L. Smith, George Smit h, Harris Smith, Bird Smith, P. P. Smith and Robert B. Smith.
