According to grandaughter Sammi Nell Scott, daughter of his son, Sam T. Scott, John D. was very abusive to his wife and children. This may explain why his son Samuel ran away from home at age 13.
According to family lore, John D. reportedly killed someone in Ohio, then he escaped and became sheriff somewhere in Missouri around 1875. Moved to Texas about 1883.
According to Census taken June 11 1900, his occupation was listed as a Farmer.
John D. Scott, age 75 living with wife of one year, Mary, occupation listed as "own income" He owned his own house without mortgage, and was a survivor of union army. Living two farms down was son John P. Scott, 28, and his wife of four years Lou, 27, and their two young children Sudie and John. ______________________________________________________
