Bible of Peter Kolk and Parthenia Gates' Bible, in the possession of W. V. Knott of Tallahasse, Florida, states that Charles Gates, Sr. was born on June 15th 1738, and died October 9, 1805 .Elizabeth Gates was born on February 26, 1736 and died December 17, 1807 in Georgia. Land Office Patents & Grants: Charles Gates, Buckingham County, Virginia, 20 June 1772, 400 acres on the waters of Slate River, Patents No. 40, 1771-72, p. 684. Son, Charles Gates II, was born in Buckingham County, Virginia, 14 January 1761. Took Oath of Allegiance in Henry Co. Virginia in 1776 for service in the Revoluntionary War. After war left Virginia and went to South Carolina and was granted a track of land in Pendleton District January 1, 1785 and June 5, 1786 on the Saluda River. Charles delivered a deed to Allen Robinson, Nov 23, 1805 in Picken Co. S.C. He moved to Franklin Co, Georgia, later to Jackson Co, and Gwinnette Co. Georgia. In Gwinnette Co. he built Gates Ferry for people and cargo to cross the Chattahooslee River. In 1827 was one of the 1st trustees of William & Mary College. He owned 32 slaves, had a beautiful home. Found in Buckingham County, Virginia, a deed dated 20 June 1772 for 400 acres on the waters of Slate river, Patents No. 40, 1771-1772, page 684. (Insert Copy here) There is also a William Gates, in Amelia County, Virginia, Adm - 1735, Indexed as 1755 z. in Torrence. Amelia Will Book 1, 734-1761, p. 61B (2nd pagination) Charles Gates Sr. is found in the Tithables of 1773 as well as Elijah and William Gates. Charles Sr is found again in the Tithables of 1774 along with Hezekiah, Elijah and William Gates. On June 19, 1777 this letter letter from Lewis Willis to Charles Gates (letter to be typed and inserted here) In volume nine, page 143 of the Virginia Magazine of History and Biography, a list under hand seal of those that took Sate Oath before Thomas Hamilton, dated January 1778 in Henry County Virginia we find on March 7, 1778 list Samuel Gates and Charles Gates. On May 13, 1778, William Gates is listed. In the history of Henry County Virginia complied by J. R. A. Hill, page 305 list as a citizen of Henry County Virginia who Oath of Alligiance are Charles Gates, Samuel Gates, William Gates and James Gates. In the 1790 Federal Census, Charles Gates Sr. appeaars in the 96th district of South Carolina. After the Revolutionary War had been won, Charles Gates migrated to the state of Georgia. Many researchers feel that the following were also the children of Charles and Elizabeth Gates: James Gates Mary Gates Sarah Gates William Gates Deed Records in Georgia: 1. Index to The Headright and Bounty Grants of Georgia, 1756-1909 Grantee: Charles Gates, two grants listed for Burke County, Georgia. 1st found in Grant Book TTT, page 133, for 200 acres, granted in 1790. Second, listed also for Burke County, Georgia, Grant Book UUU, page 515, for 200 acres, granted in 1791. 2. Warren County, Georgia, Deed Book A, pages 181-182, "Warren Co., Ga., Feb. 15, 1796, ELISHA PRUITT, collector of Co. of Warren County, to CHARLES GATES, Land at public sale for 10 shillings (Burke County, when surveyed) containing 200 acres bounded by CHARLES HARVEY'S land, CHARLES GATES...plat signed by GEO MATHEWS, March 31, 1795. ELISHA PRUITT (LS). Wit: JAMES MCCORMICK JP. Rec. Aug. 24, 1796. 2. Jackson County, Georgia; 30 April 1797, deed from Valentine Gates to Charles Gates, Sr., for land on Crooked Creek, about 9 miles south of Jefferson, of ordinary of Jackson County, Georgia 3. JacksonCounty, Georgia; 7 January 1804, a deed for 47 acres on Crooked Creek from Charles Gates, Sr. and Peter Kolb to John Coleman. In the bible of Peter Kolk and Parathenia Gates Kokb, daughter of Charles Gates Sr. (In the possession of W. V. Knott of Tallahasee, Florida), Charles Gates, Sr. was born 15 June 1738, and his wife Elizabeth was born on 26 February, 1736. Charles Gates Sr. died 9 October 1805 and Elizabeth, his wife, died 17 December 1807 in Georgia. Other Notes regarding Charles Gates: 1.
