I had told you that I knew nothing of "Big Uncle George", 1 of 7 brothers, but I found an ol d letter from him to my Grandfather, Harris Smith. "Big Uncle George" wrote this letter Ma y 12, 1860. He lived at Clarksville, Tennessee. He was trustee of the Company and Mayor o f the town at this date. His wife was named Betsey - 1 daughter, Jennie. - Nancy Lee (Nanc y Strather Smith), 23 Jan 1936 - (page 29).

Colonel George Smith came here from Wilson Co., Tennessee and was a partner in the dry good s business with T. W. Barksdale in New Providence (1 mile from Clarksville) and became associ ated with Mr. Allen Johnson in the same business in 1836, still giving his personal attentio n to a store in Wilson Co. until 1841 when he moved to Clarksville. He moved to Port Royal , merchandising in 1844, and returned to Clarksville in 1854 taking charge of the Franklin Ho use. He was elected Mayor in 1858, taking charge of the city, serving four years, and also s erved two terms ad County Trust. Colonel Smith died here in 1864 in the 69th year of his age , a true and noble man loved by everybody. - Picturesque Clarksville, Past and Present, pag e 152, published by W. P. Titus (page 30).

I, H. S. Kimble, County Judge of Montgomery do certify that I have made settlement with Col . George Smith Trustee for the County of Montgomery of which the above is a duplicate and fin d that he received from all sources for the year 1858 and 1859 up to date the sum of eight th ousand one hundred and sixty three dollars and forty six cents and that he has disbursed up t o date including commissions as stated above one thousand three hundred and seventy three an d forty nine cents showing a balance of revenue and due to the Trustee two hundred and ten do llars and three cents. Received by D. N. Kennedy agent of R. Marshall and accounted for thi s settlement of this date on page 4 of this book, 23 May 1859 - H. S. Kimble Judge and C. - R ecord Book "P", County Clerk Office - sent by Mrs. Norine H. Askew, Clarksville, Tennesse e - 16 June 1936 - (page 30).

George Smith Administratrix Bond. We Elizabeth M. Smith are boung (bound) to the State of Te nnessee in the penalty of Three Thouand dollars, Witness our hand this 17th day of June 1865 . The condition of this obligation is such that where as the bond Elizabeth M. Smith has bee n appointed administratrix of the Estate of George Smith deceased. Now if the said E. M. Smi th shall well and truly or may be required by law, this obligation shall be void otherwise t o remain in force and virture (sic). Acknowledged in open court June Term of 1865. Oath . W. E.
