 Includes NotesNotes for James Mayes:
Meaning of the name as compiled by the Media Research Bureau of Washington, D.C. The people calling themselves Mayes have been traced back to Netherlandish origin about 15th century. And the name is derived from the River Meuse, which in Dutch is called Maas. Spelling of the name has changed down through the years as follows: Mas, Maas, Maase, Meess, Mayse, Maize, Mays, and Mayes.

The Mayes Motto, "A Mays word is his bond".

It is my understanding that our line of Mayes were of Scott-Irish descent and were sent to Northern Ireland around the early 1600 hundreds.
The first of our line to immigrate to America was James Mayes born about 1670. His three sons; James, Andrew, and Thomas were all born in Northern Ireland and emigrated to the U. S. with their families and their father, James Mayes in the 1730's.
