The Craven & McKeegan Families From Ireland To New York

Updated December 15, 2006

About Our Family Research

Peter Joseph Craven b/01 Jan 1880 in Queens,NY married Margaret McKeegan in New York about 1900.They both were from Irish roots which I am finding extremely hard to trace.
Peter came from a very poor family and never spoke of his parents or ancestors. His parents James Craven and Katherine Ryan are said to come from either Roscommon or Co.Antrim in Ireland.I found where his mother had arrived in 1866 on the ship The James Foster Jr. with his two oldest brothers John and James and both listed as being born in England.John was age 3 at sailing and James was age 1.
There were seven children in all.Six boys one girl.John b/1863.James b/ 1864,Michael b/1867,Nicholas b/1871,William b/1875,Mary C. b/1877,Peter b/1880.Possibly eight as my one uncle who is still with us today said he was named after his Uncle Thomas.I do find a Thomas born 01 jan 1882 and passed away at a young age of 36 leaving a wife and children which possibly could be a connection.
The McKeegan side is equaly hard to trace.Margaret McKeegan
was b/04 Apr 1879 in Greenpoint,Brooklyn,NY.She on the other hand came from a prominent family. Her father Patrick McKeegan was a Captain of a Lighter(tug boat) in New York Harbour. Her mother was Katherine Murray. They had children Mary b/1875 married Hugh O'Hare.Katherine b/1877 married Charles Monaghan an she passed away by 1901.Margaret b/1879 married Peter Craven.
Patrick b/1881 married Emma ?.James b/1882 and Daniel b/1884 married Mary Barr
The Mckeegan families were raised in Greenpoint,Brooklyn,
New York.Again,I am unable to get past the great grandparents.
James Craven b/abt 1835 Ireland is said to have gotten ill and returned to Ireland. His wife, my g grandmother, isn't found after 1880 other than a Katherine Craven about the same age marrying in New York.
Patrick McKeegan is also to have gotten seriuosly ill and returned to Ireland to die. However,we find reference to his wife Katherine(Kitty as she was known) remarrying about 1889 or before. This is shown by the birth of her youngest son Daniel in 1884 and the census of 1900 as her being married to Wm Kelly ands having rwo daughters,Lizzie and Jennie. One being born about 1890 the other about 1893.They are listed on the census along with her other children(sons ,as step sons to head of household.)While her eldest son lives next door with his sister and family ,the O'Hares. So from this we assume Patrick has passed away.
All of this of course isa mystery ro all as we do not have any further knowledge of these two families. However,I would love to hear from anyone that may be able to shed light on when and when my great grandparents were born.
