About Our Family Research

COTTINGHAM is a British surname. MORGAN is an Irish surname. ROBINSON (Robertson) can be either a British or a Irish surname. BENTON is a Irish surname. It means "a place of bent grasses"In other words a place of lush growing for grass. When grass grows high it will bend over. We see this effect here on my home place. The MORGANS and COTTINGHAMS lived in Ouachita and Nevada cty. respectively. The BENTONS came to Ouachita cty. Ar. circa 1870 from worth cty. ga. The Robinsons( also spelled Robertson) came to ar. circa 1895, from McNairy cty. tenn. The Robinsons were represented by one person, i.e., my grandfather, Dolphus Pinckney Robinson. I have not been able to uncover any cause for the different spellings of the surname. However, therewere Robinsons living in Bierne, Ar. when Dolphus arrived. Later some of the Robertsons living in McNairy cty. Tenn. used the spelling of Robinson. Dolphus' mother was still using Robertson as late as1901. My father, Howard P. Robinson was born in Ark. in 1901.
